About Cottonwood (big Bend, Tx)

Cottonwood Campground is a quiet desert oasis in the southwestern corner of Big Bend National Park. Conveniently located between the Castolon Historic District, the scenic Santa Elena Canyon and the tail end of the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive, this small, 30-site campground is one of the least-known and quiet campgrounds in the park. There is one group campsite and 30 individual sites. This is a remote campground in a remote park. It is dry camping, no hook-ups, and no generators are permitted. There is not a fill or dump station, please come prepared. Cottonwood gets its name from the cottonwood trees that surround and provide shade for the facility nearby the Rio Grande. A general store and visitor center -- a converted former military outpost -- are also nearby. The campground is at an elevation of 1,900 ft. (580 m). It is relatively cool in the peak seasons of fall and winter due to cold air sinking into the lower elevations. In the spring and summer, this campground is very hot, with temperatures normally exceeding 100° F (38° C) from mid-March through August.

Close to Santa Elena Canyon & Castalon so good location for those areas. Smaller campground, but nice spacing. Sadly the big cottonwoods had to be cut down so there isn’t much shade at many sites. Restrooms, but didn’t use. Fresh water spigots in park. Had a weird experience, hopefully isolated… someone briefly opened and slammed my van rear door in middle of night. I generally always lock doors! By time I looked outside, no one around. Maybe a kid prank. Otherwise, all good!

Nice little campground close to Santa Elena Canyon and Castolon. Very flat for camping. Lots of shade. Need to add showers, since it can get very hot there.

Cottonwood is a good basic campground. There was little shade as most of the trees have died because of the severe drought in the area. The pit toilets were good, and staff was willing to assist with any issues.

Close to the Saint Elana Canyon trail, and worth to go checkout the sunset around there as the sun goes down into the canyon

Campsite had a good amount of space and decent shade. Campground, restrooms, and tables were clean. Reasonably close to river access and Santa Elena canyon which is probably one of the best sights in the park. Very little light pollution and very good views to the south if you're looking to do astrophotography.

We enjoyed our stay at Cottonwood. We loved our time in Big Bend. Especially loved Santa Elena canyon. But, we did wonder why generators aren't allowed.
