Cottonwood Campground offers a peaceful and quiet atmosphere, ideal for those seeking a low-key experience near Santa Elena Canyon. While many of the original cottonwood trees have been lost, leading to reduced shade and some disappointment, the campground still provides a clean and well-maintained environment, with friendly staff and decent facilities. Visitors appreciate the beautiful surroundings, wildlife sightings, and proximity to hiking trails, making it a worthwhile spot despite its recent challenges.

This campground is a gem, which has a shaded, broad grassy lawn (!) for tents. We spotted a great-horned owl may reside in the overhead cottonwoods. There were many other birds, and it’s a short drive to Santa Elena canyon.

This my 4th review for this trip! I love Big Bend. This is my fourth review for a 10 day stay because this is the 4th campsite. Why? Because I couldn't get consecutive days at one site even though I made reservations almost two months in advance even though campsites that were "officially" reserved were unoccupied. The government knows the problem!!! Will it fix it??? Probably not. It's getting its revenue for "full" campgrounds while campers are turned away, leaving half-full campgrounds!!!

Cottonwood was beautiful, clean and quiet. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars was because of how the road work impacted our stay. We spent a lot of time negotiating long waits to and from the campground which was frustrating and time consuming.

Delightful green campsite with incredible stars. Ranger on duty very friendly and showed us the resident owls. Short drive to Santa Elena and Castolon store a stroll away. Really enjoyed our stay!

Really great place to camp out. We stayed at the large group site and had plenty of space. Wildlife is a real concern so make use of the bear boxes to store all your things, they're very handy.
