About Cottonwood (Big Bend, TX)

Cottonwood Campground is a quiet desert oasis in the southwestern corner of Big Bend National Park. Conveniently located between the Castolon Historic District, the scenic Santa Elena Canyon and the tail end of the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive, this small, 30-site campground is one of the least-known and quiet campgrounds in the park. There is one group campsite and 30 individual sites. This is a remote campground in a remote park. It is dry camping, no hook-ups, and no generators are permitted. There is not a fill or dump station, please come prepared. Cottonwood gets its name from the cottonwood trees that surround and provide shade for the facility nearby the Rio Grande. A general store and visitor center -- a converted former military outpost -- are also nearby. The campground is at an elevation of 1,900 ft. (580 m). It is relatively cool in the peak seasons of fall and winter due to cold air sinking into the lower elevations. In the spring and summer, this campground is very hot, with temperatures normally exceeding 100° F (38° C) from mid-March through August.

What Guests Are Saying

Cottonwood Campground offers a serene and quiet experience, close to Santa Elena Canyon and various hiking trails. Visitors appreciated the clean facilities, friendly staff, and beautiful surroundings, with many noting the enjoyment of wildlife sightings. However, the loss of cottonwood trees has diminished shade, and some areas require management improvements, but overall, guests had a pleasant stay and expressed a desire to return.

So many birds around camp, and lots of places to hike nearby. We really enjoyed our stay here!

Beautiful, spacious and excellent location. Hose cannot connect to water source so no RV water hook-up. Otherwise, nice small campgroud. Night sky is beautiful.

We managed to book 2 nights @ Cottonwood in early January (holiday week) and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The campground is small and very quaint with large trees and a great view of the canyon walls. The site was spotlessly clean, very quiet, and well managed by the host staff (very helpful). We wish we could have booked a longer stay but no sites were available. Highly recommend this campground.

Great campground. Well spaced sites. No hookups and no generators allowed. No dump station, so you have to drive to RGV or Chisos Basin. There wasn’t any but one spigot for drinking water, but that was OK for our purposes. Lots of great birding in areas.

Cottonwood is a beautiful campsite. We watched the full moon rise over Castolon Peak on a beautiful evening, two nights before Big Bend was shut down by the big snowstorm.

Great campsite but no frills. If RV, Make sure water and LP is full and tanks are empty.

This site was pretty nice - when in Big Bend, it's nice when you can camp on grass and not have to worry about large rocks. This site didn't have much shade though so you might have to move your chairs around to get shade in neighboring sites...
