About Chisos Basin Campground (Big Bend, TX)

Chisos Basin Campground, perched high in the rugged Chisos Mountains, is the most sought-after campground in Big Bend National Park. At an altitude of 5.4 ft. (1646 m), the campground is surrounded on all sides by tall, rocky cliffs and is conveniently located near some of the park's most spectacular and popular trails. This campground offers excellent views and mild temperatures. Also found in the Chisos Basin area is the Chisos Basin Visitor Center, the General Store and the Chisos Mountains Lodge, which houses the only restaurant in Big Bend National Park. Important: The road to the campground is steep and winding with sharp hairpin turns. Trailers over 19 ft and RVs over 24 ft are not recommended, and will not be accommodated. No RV parking is available at the group campground, nor is generator use allowed. All sites where you may have a generator are now reservable. If you need to use a generator and you do not have a reservation in a site that will allow generator use, you will need to camp elsewhere.  Note: Campsites are small, rocky, and not level, so there are very few sites truly suitable for RVs. Many sites will allow an RV/Trailer/Van/Camper, but you will not be able to get level. The campground is almost always full, and if the site you booked doesn’t work, in all likelihood you will NOT be able to switch sites, and will either have to make your site work, or find accommodations at another campground. It is necessary that you carry some form of leveling blocks/devices with you. Please carefully review the site details before making a reservation.

This location has the most impressive 360° views of any campsite I've ever visited! From the panoramic views to minute details, the camping area alone would have been worth the long trip. Nearby hiking and drives with additional amazing panoramas make this park a worthwhile effort to see! Well informed Park Rangers with genuine concern about wildlife and campers safety and interaction was the exceptional highlight of the entire experience! We plan to come back!

If you’re thinking about camping in Big Bend, absolutely choose Chisos Basin campground. It is going to be at least 10 degrees cooler than RGV campground and it’s convenient to the Windows Trail and Lost Mine Trail. The camp hosts were so awesome too. They welcome you and are a wealth of information about the park and how to plan your day(s). They are also there to make sure you don’t get into trouble so stop by and spend some time talking with them and you will enjoy your time in Big Bend so much more. I can’t wait to go back.

The bathrooms at this campground were always clean and well maintained. Only wish there were showers! We went at the end of May and while the days were awfully hot, the evenings cooled off and it was comfortable to sleep in our tent. The ground was extremely rocky where we had to set up our tent and we had no shade but some other sites did have metal pergolas over their metal picnic tables. Driving back to our campsite in the evening proved eventful. One night we saw a Mexican black bear crossing the road and the next night we saw a bobcat. Both were 2 mi away from the campsite. Our meal at Chisos Mountains Lodge wasn't very good and I chose the lunch meat we brought with us over finishing my leftovers.

The Rio Grande river was dried up. This was very sad and alarming.

Loved this campsite. Amazing views of the night sky. At the end of the loop, so not many people passing by. Room for a tent at either end of the site, though the right hand site might be overlooked slightly by your neighbour. Ground is tough, but pegs went in fine with the help of a hammer (or rock) once you find the right spot.

The campground was quite nice. The hosts were very helpful and friendly. It was hot, but that's no one's fault.
