About Mammoth Cabin

The Mammoth Guard station is located at 8.6 ft in elevation. There are two cabins on the grounds. The Mammoth Cabin was built on site while the Lake Cabin was moved to the site from its original location in the 1980s. Both cabins were constructed in the 1930s serving as forest ranger and fire crew dwellings for many years. The cabins overlook a wide expanse of sagebrush valleys with timbered slopes and ridgelines. The grounds that cabins are located is also an active administrative site. Visitors can expect to see Forest Service personnel using the grounds adjacent to the cabins. Travel Trailers and RVs are not permitted at this facility. If others are seeking to be close to your group during your reservation they should look at the nearby campgrounds at Gooseberry Group Campground and Gooseberry Reservoir.

There was a major rodent problem. Mice droppings everywhere in the cabin. We saw 2 mice the first night. We went in to town the next morning and purchased 4 traps. We set them that night and caught 4 mice. There were still more. Very gross and won’t stay again.

Stayed over July 24th weekend. Great location and accommodations and would go there again. It was so nice and cool at night, almost chilly so bring a sweater. We had deer walk right up to the porch and stroll beside our cabin during the middle of the day. We rented both the Mammoth and Lake cabins so didn’t have to worry about neighbors. The cabins were pretty clean and had good furniture. Would recommend bringing your own air mattress to sleep on top of their mattress (very hard). The hot showers were fantastic - don’t forget your own towels, soap, etc. Electricity is provided by solar panels and was enough for us but you should try to conserve (batteries ran out our last night). The kitchen has a lot of silverware, pots, pans, etc. There is no fridge but coolers kept food cold. The Mammoth cabin’s oven didn’t work all that great so cooked lasagna in the Lake cabin. Brought our own outdoor camp stove and cooked most meals outside. Bring your own camp chairs to circle the fire ring. Plenty of downed wood logs but be sure to bring your own axe to split wood (we left a bunch for the next renters - you’re welcome). Great shade throughout the day.

Things to do... Chop wood, nap, read, ride ATVs, hike in the nearby prairies, bird watch, etc. Nearby Gooseberry Reservoir has some decent fishing, kayaking and canoeing but not much for swimming for the kids. Beware, there are leaches and the fisherman are not nice if kids are playing nearby. Zero cell service across multiple networks = bliss. Some ATVs passing on nearby roads were annoyingly loud so recommend earplugs if you’re a light sleeper.

Ultimately, remember that you’re paying 50 bucks for a cabin with electricity, flushing toilets, hot water, beds, etc. It’s no Grand America but I’d still rather stay here regardless. Our family had a great time and we would go back again.

Great facility and the area is beautiful. Mountain biking/hiking are limited nearby and this is OHV country (nothing wrong with that), so be prepared for weekends to have vehicles buzzing all around.
