About Morris Hill Campground

Morris Hill is a peaceful, rustic campground for groups of family and friends. The family campground is a family-friendly destination perched on a ridge above Lake Moomaw. Kids can have fun at the playground while older generations sit back and relax in the shade. The group sites accommodate up the 25 guests with space for up to eight tents. Campers can enjoy the wonders of camping with simple pleasures like s'mores on the campfire, berry picking in the woods, and watching for waterfowl and wildlife like deer. The convenient location near Lake Moomaw and sandy swim beaches, a fishing pier, boat ramp, and hiking and biking trails makes Morris Hill a popular spot.

Nice campground. Bathrooms well maintained. Our neighbors were unfortunately loud, but that is not a reflection of the campground. Very close to the Jackson River Bike Trail and multiple put ins for the river. Great location! Would definitely stay here again.

Overall a nice experience. We had four sites for 7 of us. All in tents. Sites were nice. Considering it was over labor day weekend it was quiet and peaceful. Camp hosts were helpful and came around selling firewood and quick to get us ice when we asked. Bears were not a big nuisance like at some other Virginia parks. The only critiques I would make are that the bathrooms could stand some updating. They were fairly clean but kind of old. The trails were overgrown. Couldn't really hike down to the lake. Looks like they sprayed some herbicide on parts of it but this needed much more clearing out. Other than that it was a great place to spend the weekend.

We arrived on Thursday 8/6 after a long day of thunderstorms and unfortunately our tent pad was flooded. We waited for about an hour while the rain lightened and luckily the water had drained out. Generally a pretty wet weekend but when the sun was out in the mornings/midday we played at lake Moomaw. Honestly one of the most beautiful lakes I’ve been to in Virginia. Better than lake Anna in my opinion. Facilities were decent, kept stocked with toilet paper and hand soap. Overall a great weekend even with our tent getting flooded and having to sleep in the car, would highly recommend.
Definitely prepare for bears, they came through both nights looking for food. Bugs weren’t too bad, but might’ve been hiding from the rain. The grates on the fire pits were really helpful for our cast iron skillet and pie irons. Clean drinking water right by the site was also a huge plus. Campsite was nice and shaded by plenty of trees, good place to set up a hammock. The grade of the campsite driveways weren’t as bad as I was led to believe by the website. My friends old Toyota Camry made it in and out of the site just fine.

Campsites are close together in pairs, reserve both spaces for a more laid back camp experience. A must do is the trail to the lake which at an average pace takes about 20 minutes. The camp hosts are seldom seen and cannot be bothered with questions. While there is a quiet time it is not enforced and the campsite can become very loud. There are bears every night be bear aware.
