Loft Mountain is a very large campground with numerous first-come, first-serve and reservable campsites occupying a plateau on the eastern side of Skyline Drive. The quality of the sites is uneven; some are large, others small, some have tent pads, most don't (the tent pads appear to be limited to campsites on the perimeter). Bathroom facilities are good but the water fountain nearest our campsite (A75) was non-operational. Curiously, the campground offered no places other than the bathrooms to clean dishes. Because we visited the last week before the campground closed for the winter, the camp store was pretty bare but is large enough to be well stocked during busier times. The true advantage of Loft Mountain is its proximity to some of the best hiking in Shenandoah National Park -- Riprap Trail, Blackrock, Jones and Doyles River Falls, Hightop, Frazier Discovery Trail, and many more offer hikes ranging from moderate to strenuous, affording grand vistas and in some cases fun scrambles. Recommendation on tent sites: A10-A20 on the western perimeter of the campground provide great views from their perch on the edge of the plateau into the Doyles River gorge. All in all, we found this a fine campground and plan to return. Indeed, other campers mentioned that they were perennial visitors and much preferred it over Big Meadows and Skyland farther north in the Park.

This is a wonderful campground with great hikes in the immediate area! I wish there was a was to find out, in advance how flat the site is for tent camping. It can be hard to tell from photos. Our camp hosts were friendly and very helpful. If you are there at the end of the season, just be aware that the camp store may not have what you need, as they are not restocking a week before closing.

This was a great place to visit!! But, kind of have the things you want to do planned out. It will take you a while to get to them if they are off the mountain.

Best place to camp in Virginia on Skyline drive. Quiet, spacious, clean, and relaxing. Hiking trails within walking distance and beautiful mountaintop views.
