Prior to our arrival, we got an email alerting us to the presence of Thatcher ants and to avoid camping directly on their mounds. When we arrived, we discovered that the infestation was so severe that there was no where to place a tent without disturbing several ant hills. While we understand this is a naturally occurring event, there was no way for us to utilize the space safely and we ended up having to find somewhere else to sleep. There were also lots of daytime mosquitos. This site took the “Pleasant” out of Pleasant Valley.
We are experienced campers, and this site felt out of the range of comfort for our group. Would potentially work best for someone with a trailer or RV, but as tent campers, not a place we’d recommend.

Spent 4 nights, Mon. thru Thurs., in our motorhome. Beautiful weather with plenty of shade. All campsites were posted with up to date reservation notices or available signage. We had made reservations and it worked out well. The hosts were from the next campground up the highway so were not at this campground. They did come around and were pleasant. Campground was clean and all sites were ready for campers. Restrooms were clean also. Fishing season actually closed on this part of the American River midweek due to Salmon spawning concerns. Would have been nice if hosts had posted this information. I realize they are not game wardens. Some other campers told me the water pump was out of order but we did not have a need for it anyway. I did talk to the Forest Ranger as we were leaving about it. He said that he would check it out. The only problem we had was on Thursday night someone in the campground ran their generator well past the 10pm quiet time. It was still running after 11:30pm when I passed out. Host should do a drive thru at 10:15 to shut them noisy things OFF.

We've camped here before and love it. Very scenic and quiet. Only an hour from Yakima. You can see and hear the American River. You can cross the river and hike to Pleasant Valley Lake to fish for cutthroat and rainbow trout. Lots of space between campsites...very private.
