About Heybrook Lookout

The Heybrook Lookout sits atop its namesake ridge at 1,700 feet. The lookout itself rises 67 feet above the ridgeline and provides spectacular views of breathtaking glacial peaks surrounding the valley. The first Heybrook fire lookout was a simple tent platform built in 1925. The Forest Service replaced it seven years later with a 45-foot log leg tower, with a ground-level cabin intended as sleeping quarters for fire rangers; however, rampant rodents eventually drove the rangers up into the tower where they lived until a 67-foot lookout was built in 1964. Heybrook Lookout is one of only 106 lookouts left in Washington State.

The beauty and solitude of this place made an impression on me. But the hike down in the rain was very sketchy.

Such stunning views! I have wanted to stay in the Lookout for years and was so excited and grateful to have gotten to do this! Be sure to plan some hikes around the area! You get a bird's eye view of Bridal Falls, so it could be a cool experience if you do the Lake Serene/ Bridal Falls hike pre/post lookout stay to get such a unique experience. Do a little research beforehand so you know what mountains you are viewing, along with wildlife (especially the birds!)

Heybrook Lookout is a jewel. Its a beautiful lookout, well kept, and the accommodations were better than expected. Having such a unique vantage point was special. We did a lot of researching on what accommodations were in the lookout and couldn't find anything so here goes: Full size bed, twin size mattress (tucked under full size bed that can be pulled out), stove with fuel, pots and pans, dining table with 4 chairs and a bookshelf of puzzles and some small games. People had left potable and non-potable water in containers for cooking and washing, as well as some snacks. You will want to bring lanterns/headlamps, water/water filtration and sleeping bags.

Although the lookout and experience was wonderful, there were two incidents that made the experience pretty terrible. First, during sunset of our second night, myself and friend hiked back down to get a couple of gallons of water that we had stored in the car. On the way down, mind you it was getting dark, we saw a single male hiker head up the trail. When we came back to the Lookout, our wives who had locked themselves in the Lookout when we left, said that this person was banging on the door, asking to come in, and was fairly aggressive. No harm was done, but keep in mind that you are vulnerable as you are 60 feet in the air with no exit. Secondly, when we returned back to our car, there was a strong smell of gasoline. I noticed my gas cap was open. Thinking they siphoned some gas, I turned my car on and my gas tank did not look depleted. Low and behold, when I fill up my gas tank and find gas gushing out from under my car, I find out my gas line had been cut. Not only was this dangerous as we drove all of the way home with a exposed gas line, but they did significant damage to our car and got nothing out of the tank. Your car will be the only one at the trailhead over night, and the vandals know and will prey on it. State Patrol confirmed this was commonplace.
