We loved staying at Heybrook! The trail was great, not too long for the kids and the lookout was clean and cozy. We even got a spectacular sunset!

Amazing place to experience! The views would be less of an experience on an overcast day.
There are dishes, stove, etc available for use. Take into consideration the additional water necessary to pack for cleaning of them, if used.
Popular place. Beware of visitors all hours of the evening/early mornings especially!

We had an amazing stay at heybrook lookout. The lookout was clean and well stocked and the views are even more spectacular from the top level! We will be back!

Heybrook is always a joy to stay at. Thank you to everyone who leaves it better than you found it and cleans up when you leave. The toilet paper off the trail the entire way is so sad to see - please do better. The bathroom area definitely needs some attention and would love to volunteer as a clean up crew when I get back to the state as I was only visiting one day. Check-in process was different than the last time I stayed and I would say it was easier and I like the change.
The only downside I experienced this time was loud and disruptive groups hiking in until 10pm and someone trying to get through the “trap” door at 5am with a significant amount of force. There was no break in loud groups of hikers and it definitely put a damper on the peace flow, but it’s to be expected for an easy and accessible trail to such a great spot.
Thank you to the FS staff who keep this place in such great shape for the public.

I have stayed here previously and will continue to put it on my summer list of things to do. I would give more stars if possible!

Drive U.S. 2 for 2 miles east of the town of Index, just past milepost 37. Limited parking for the trailhead is located on the north side of the highway across from the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest sign.
From the trailhead, it is a 1 mile hike to the lookout with an elevation gain of 900 feet. Tenants must climb 84 steps in order to reach the main cabin.
Heybrook Lookout is accessible via U.S. Highway 2, located approximately 2 miles from the trailhead, east of Index.

11 mi drive to downtown Skykomish (about 13 min)
Policies & Rules
General
- Reservations cannot be made for more than 2 days in a row. Entry to the lookout is by key, which must be obtained from the Skykomish Ranger Station.
- Water is not available; guests must bring their own supply of water.
- Extreme caution must be taken when using lanterns, cook stoves or any other appliances with open flame (candles and incense is prohibited).
- Pack out all food and garbage and clean the facility before you leave. Keep the building and grounds clean to deter squirrel, mice, rats, bears and other wildlife from area.
- Please do not let pets roam freely, as they may endanger wildlife and plants or themselves. Pets are not allowed in the lookout or on the stairs.
- Access to the lookout in October may be impacted by early snow. Please check with the ranger station for current conditions.
- Doors and windows should be locked and all personal items removed upon departure.
- The cabin is a no-smoking facility.
- Contact the Skykomish Ranger District at (360) 677-2414 prior to arrival to check on any restrictions or conditions, such as fire or road closures, weather or storms that may affect your visit. Once a reservation has been made, each party is responsible for contacting the ranger station to make arrangements to pick up their key.
