About Heybrook Lookout

The Heybrook Lookout sits atop its namesake ridge at 1.7 ft. The lookout itself rises 67 ft above the ridgeline and provides spectacular views of breathtaking glacial peaks surrounding the valley. The first Heybrook fire lookout was a simple tent platform built in 1925. The Forest Service replaced it seven years later with a 45-foot log leg tower, with a ground-level cabin intended as sleeping quarters for fire rangers; however, rampant rodents eventually drove the rangers up into the tower where they lived until a 67-foot lookout was built in 1964. Heybrook Lookout is one of only 106 lookouts left in Washington State.

Truly incredible views on all sides!! We took it easy and played a lot of cards. Very high traffic lookout with plenty of hooligans at odd hours. Additional signage at the top would probably help with this - most didn't realize there were folks staying in the lookout. There were some signs under the sink that you could try putting up (we didn't realize they were there until our last morning). Pit toilet took us some time to find. It does have a sign and is a wooden toilet so don't settle for the literal dirt pit on a different trail off-shoot!

Such an amazing lookout with incredible 360* views. The 1 mi hike up is pretty tough but well worth it. Definitely not a secluded spot as there were people coming up all the time including the sunset seekers and then the 5am sunrise seekers. All in all a great experience though.

The tower with its 360° views was amazing. Well stocked with books, games, pots and lantern. Note that the key pick up location is at the tower at the propane tank. Pit toilet down the path to the east, was marked with orange ribbons.

A wonderful experience. A shout out to the Rangers and any others who make this facility possible. Keep up the great work!
I have stayed here previously and will continue to put it on my summer list of things to do. I would give more stars if possible!

Heybrook is always a joy to stay at. Thank you to everyone who leaves it better than you found it and cleans up when you leave. The toilet paper off the trail the entire way is so sad to see - please do better. The bathroom area definitely needs some attention and would love to volunteer as a clean up crew when I get back to the state as I was only visiting one day. Check-in process was different than the last time I stayed and I would say it was easier and I like the change.
The only downside I experienced this time was loud and disruptive groups hiking in until 10pm and someone trying to get through the “trap” door at 5am with a significant amount of force. There was no break in loud groups of hikers and it definitely put a damper on the peace flow, but it’s to be expected for an easy and accessible trail to such a great spot.
Thank you to the FS staff who keep this place in such great shape for the public.

Amazing place to experience! The views would be less of an experience on an overcast day.

There are dishes, stove, etc available for use. Take into consideration the additional water necessary to pack for cleaning of them, if used.

Popular place. Beware of visitors all hours of the evening/early mornings especially!

We loved staying at Heybrook! The trail was great, not too long for the kids and the lookout was clean and cozy. We even got a spectacular sunset!
