Horseshoe Recreation Area is a charming campground nestled in a valley, featuring clean sites and friendly, attentive hosts who enhance the experience. Visitors appreciate the beautiful scenery, spacious campsites, and proximity to hiking and mountain biking trails. However, there are ongoing issues with bathroom maintenance and a lack of showers, which some guests would like to see addressed.

The grass needed mowed bad and bathrooms not cleaned during our 4 night stay. Other then that besides the long walk to the bathroom it was pretty scenery.

We really liked this campground. You can tell the camp hosts spend a lot of time taking care of the property. For a Forest Service campground, it's almost too manicured. There are several hiking trails accessible from the campground and it's also a short drive to the trail head to Hoye Crest, the highest point in Maryland. It's close to the towns of Thomas and Davis which both have a lot going on.

This is a beautiful, remote campground. Electric sites are situated around an open field, and nonelectric sites are in a grove of large hemlocks. Sites are various sizes, but all are rather small. Verify that your unit will fit the site you're reserving.
There are two day-use pavilions. The larger one is a beautiful example of CCC workmanship. There's a stream to splash around in. A trail follows the stream and crosses a bridge. From there it goes to the top of the mountain and connects with another trail. There are also horseshoe pits.
We stayed in Site 10. The campsite description said 15 amp electric, so we were pleasantly surprised to find 30 amp and 50 amp service at our site. A water faucet nearby had clear, colorless water that tasted good. There were two toilet buildings, but one was out of order when we were there. Each building has two single-person bathrooms with a toilet and cold water sink--no showers. Bathrooms were clean, and camp hosts had stocked them with soap. There was also a vault toilet, but I didn't use it.
The camp host sells ice and firewood. Prices were reasonable.
This campground is in a very mountainous area. The roads are steep and narrow, and have sharp curves. Directions provided in my confirmation email avoid the worst hairpin turns, but that route is much longer than the route suggested by Google Maps. We tried the Google Maps route on a day trip out, and used it when we left. The hairpin turn on the shorter route should be OK for any RV that would fit on the sites at the campground.
Although it was a beautiful late summer weekend, this campground wasn't quite half full. Maybe the hairpin turns and the lack of cell service kept the crowds away. It was a peaceful retreat, and we really enjoyed our stay.

While it did rain the whole four days we were there. We loved the layout of the camp ground. We could not believe how quiet it is there. We took our 3 year old grand daughter for a walk up stream an she absolutely loved it. I do wish they had a dump station I guess I need to read a little better when reserving. It did not impact our stay just wish they had one. All in all we will definitely be making a return trip.

The campground is peaceful and the wildlife is a plenty to enjoy. I have been camping here for 22 years and the bathrooms are always clean now since they are newer.

Absolutely beautiful spot with wonderful camp host volunteers. Bathrooms were clean and the grounds well taken care of. The only negative thing that I might add and this is no reflection on the campground but coming from Oakland, route 9 was more like a one-way road instead of a two-way road. It was a much more pleasant experience and less white knuckle driving going the opposite way when we left the campground to St George.

We enjoyed the low key, quiet vibe of the campground. It's a beautiful setting and the creek was a highlight for the kids.

What a beautiful campground!!!! Nice to have flush toilets (we usually camp in campgrounds with vault toilets). Young adults from the YMCA camp down the road cleaned the bathrooms every day - they were super clean. We loved that there was a large open field and a beautiful babbling stream right next to the campground. At night we could see a million fireflies all going up the mountainside. Looked like something out of a movie. Mind you, we camped there the weekend of June 20 so not sure if that just happened to be when the fireflies were in abundance. There's several nice electric sites (we rented an RV so made use of one of these sites) and a separate "primitive" area for tents. We REALLY want to come back and camp in the tent area also. I'd highly recommend Horseshoe Recreation Area campground!
