About Gros Ventre Campground

Gros Ventre (pronounced ‘grow-vont’), means “big belly” in French, and the Gros Ventre Campground—surrounded by cottonwood trees and featuring stunning views of Blacktail Butte and the Teton Mountains—is truly magnificent! The campground’s location next to the Gros Ventre River offers some of the best opportunities in the park for wildlife sightings, as bison, moose, mule deer and a wide variety of birds are known to frequent the area. For avid anglers, the Gros Ventre River offers plentiful cutthroat trout, brook trout, and whitefish. While none of Gros Ventre’s campsites are on the river, all are within walking distance.The campground offers camping for tents and dry camping for RVs. Campsites include 279 individual campsites, 4 large group sites, and 39 electric-only sites, 10 of which are ADA-accessible. The campground is open from late-April to early-October.

This may be on us but we did not realize the area to the right was a part of the spot. It’s closer to the adjacent site and they were set up right near by, so we assumed it was part of their site. Issues with staking tent due to rocks. Bathrooms were near by and clean.

There is no water at site. Just a heads up. This was a surprise for us because we thought that’s what we paid for but there isn’t water so have a bladder or prepare to move your camper if you’re there for awhile. Other than that everything else was magnificent. We 100% will be back as soon as possible because it was amazing

1. There's no detailed map of this campground, to know what you're getting. No map to show you where the campsite is in relation to the restrooms, the entrance, etc. You can pick numbers so we could choose sites next to our friends, but that's it. Our campsite was in the total sun, which we weren't expecting, so we were roasting. We borrowed a canopy from friends. PLEASE generate a detailed map with site locations & which sites are located in the shade vs. in the full sun!
2. With lots of sage brush, some campsites are not conducive to staking a tent & you can't cut or remove any sage brush, understandably. On our site, there was only 1 cleared space available for a tent. Each site can have 2 tents, but the cleared space could fit only 1 on ours. So we had to put our 2nd tent on the asphalt driveway, which meant we couldn't stake it down against wind. When we returned from hiking, it had blown over, which resulted in several long scratches on our rain fly, so it now has holes in it. We repaired it before it rained, but it's aggravating to know it could have been prevented.
We saw that other sites were hit or miss: some had only enough space for 1 tent to be staked on the ground, some had space for 2 tents on the ground. There's no way to know what you're getting.
3. This can't be changed but be aware: Gros Ventre is VERY rocky & the bedrock is only about 4-6 inches under the dirt. You can't get tent stakes too deep into the ground.
4. There is NO ACTUAL SINK available to clean dishes. Prepare accordingly. We weren't the only ones who arrived at the restroom building expecting to wash dishes, only to find a wide toilet in the "washing room" instead, to flush down food particles & food wastewater. Not only that, but that toilet in the restroom building nearest to us was backed up almost to overflowing. So it wasn't functioning. We couldn't use it. Signs in the bathroom say "Don't wash dishes in the sink" but I'm sure people did.

Our reservation confirmation received the day before states 'no slide outs.' Stressed us out because it never said in the listing they were not allowed. I would have never booked the campground as we have a mega slide. They are allowed w/90% of the trailers camping all had slide outs. Was disappointed we couldn't walk our dog to the river from the campground. Other than that it was clean and amazing Teton views.

Cancellation policy

  • Reservation fees are non-refundable. For campsites, cabins, lookouts, yurts, group sites, and similar stays, we charge a reservation service fee of $8.
  • Standard cancellations usually have a $10 cancellation fee. Customers can generally cancel before the check-in date online.
  • Late cancellation rules differ by stay type.
    • Individual campsites: cancelling after 12:00am local time the day before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
    • Cabins, lookouts, and yurts: cancelling less than 14 days before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
    • One-night reservations: a late cancellation usually forfeits the full amount paid, up to the total original reservation cost.
  • Modifications are allowed before the cut-off window, but fees depend on the change. Changing to dates completely outside the original reservation dates may trigger a $10 change fee. Extending or shortening a stay that still includes original dates usually has no change fee, though refunds may depend on timing and facility rules. Switching to the same type of campsite for the same dates usually has no change fee, but price differences are charged or refunded.
  • Early departures may or may not be refunded. At certain facilities, partial refunds may be possible if staff can mark the site available for other visitors. No refund is given for a night if the early departure is requested after that day's check-out time.
  • Security deposits are separate. Security deposits may be refunded to the original payment method if the facility is left in acceptable condition, as determined by the property.
