About Gros Ventre Campground

Gros Ventre (pronounced ‘grow-vont’), means “big belly” in French, and the Gros Ventre Campground—surrounded by cottonwood trees and featuring stunning views of Blacktail Butte and the Teton Mountains—is truly magnificent! The campground’s location next to the Gros Ventre River offers some of the best opportunities in the park for wildlife sightings, as bison, moose, mule deer and a wide variety of birds are known to frequent the area. For avid anglers, the Gros Ventre River offers plentiful cutthroat trout, brook trout, and whitefish. While none of Gros Ventre’s campsites are on the river, all are within walking distance.The campground offers camping for tents and dry camping for RVs. Campsites include 279 individual campsites, 4 large group sites, and 39 electric-only sites, 10 of which are ADA-accessible. The campground is open from late-April to early-October.

We didn’t love this campground overall. The hosts were very friendly and helpful at check-in, which we appreciated. The sites themselves felt a bit underwhelming—uneven ground made setup tricky, though it didn’t affect us much since we were using a rooftop tent on our truck.

We followed the one-car-per-site rule, so our kids reserved their own site just to sleep in their car. Meanwhile, the group next to us had four motorcycles, three tents, and a hammock, which felt a little frustrating since we had paid for two sites to stay within the rules. To be fair, I’m not sure what the official guidelines are for bikes, but overall it didn’t feel like things were being monitored closely.

On the plus side, the campground was very quiet and clean. Bathrooms were standard for this type of place, and the potable water was convenient. Still, I wouldn’t choose to stay here again. I’ll admit I’m more of a backpacker and don’t usually love established campgrounds, but compared to others in the area, Colter Bay was a much better experience.

Very nice campground with plenty of bear boxes for campers. Evening ranger talk is informative and nice meeting other campers. Saw a bull moose right next to our site. Amazing.

Had an amazing time camping here! Everyone was so kind and extremely helpful if needed. They had a ton of cool stuff offered almost every night at the amphitheater, moose walked right through the camp, and bathrooms were always clean. Will most definitely make another reservation in the future whenever we return!!

Very surprised to find out people could park overnight in the Amphitheater, some for multiple days. This is unfair to those who planned ahead and paid to stay. I also was surprised by the lack of following rules. Vehicles parked on the grass and vegetation, and grills left out on tables.

The maximum stay permitted at Gros Ventre Campground is 14 nights, and the maximum cumulative stay between all park campgrounds is 30 nights.

Guest check-in begins at noon. Check-out is 11 AM.

Generators are only permitted in loops A, B, C and along the East Corridor (EC).

We have one potable (drinking) water station and two rv dump stations across from the office cabin as you enter the campground.

Maximum guests allowed per site (not including group sites) is six. Tent sites allow for up to two tents and two vehicles. Not all sites are able to accomodate two tents. Guests will need to review site specific information for maximum number of tents permitted in individual sites. RV sites allow for one RV (tow included) only. (For reference, 2 motorcycles = 1 vehicle)
