About Sugarloaf Campground (WY)

At an elevation of 10,800 feet, Sugarloaf is the highest elevation campground that the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest has to offer and it is one of the highest elevation campgrounds in the United States. The sites at this location offer a breathtaking panorama of the Snowy Range which peaks out at 12,000 feet. There is little or no shade in the campground due to elevation, the pine beetle infestation, and the removal of hazard trees. This campground will have a mix of reservation sites and first-come, first-served sites for the 2026 season. If you are not reserving your site, you may be able to pay for your campsite(s) by cash or check once you are at the campground.

Sugarloaf Campground offers a beautiful location with clean, well-spaced sites that include picnic tables and good tent pads. It features stunning views, especially during sunrises and sunsets, and is conveniently located near several hiking trails. However, campers should come prepared for windy and cold conditions, as well as the absence of firewood.

Quiet, clean campground with a friendly host. No firewood - come prepared. We lucked out with weather, but this area is generally very windy and cold. Most of the sites have little to know shade and protection from wind. Some tent pads are right next to picnic table and fire ring, but some are a little walk away. Beautiful views from most sites. Several hiking trails within walking distance and even more within driving distance. Beautiful sunrises and sunsets, especially with any of the lakes in view.

Cancellation policy

  • Reservation fees are non-refundable. For campsites, cabins, lookouts, yurts, group sites, and similar stays, we charge a reservation service fee of $8.
  • Standard cancellations usually have a $10 cancellation fee. Customers can generally cancel before the check-in date online.

    • One-night reservations: a late cancellation usually forfeits the full amount paid, up to the total original reservation cost.
  • Modifications are allowed before the cut-off window, but fees depend on the change. Changing to dates completely outside the original reservation dates may trigger a $10 change fee. Extending or shortening a stay that still includes original dates usually has no change fee, though refunds may depend on timing and facility rules. Switching to the same type of campsite for the same dates usually has no change fee, but price differences are charged or refunded.
  • Early departures may or may not be refunded. At certain facilities, partial refunds may be possible if staff can mark the site available for other visitors. No refund is given for a night if the early departure is requested after that day's check-out time.
