About Sugarloaf Campground (WY)

At an elevation of 10,800 feet, Sugarloaf is the highest elevation campground that the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest has to offer and it is one of the highest elevation campgrounds in the United States. The sites at this location offer a breathtaking panorama of the Snowy Range which peaks out at 12,000 feet. There is little or no shade in the campground due to elevation, the pine beetle infestation, and the removal of hazard trees. This campground will have a mix of reservation sites and first-come, first-served sites for the 2026 season. If you are not reserving your site, you may be able to pay for your campsite(s) by cash or check once you are at the campground.

What Guests Are Saying

Sugarloaf Campground offers a beautiful location with clean, well-spaced sites that include picnic tables and good tent pads. It features stunning views, especially during sunrises and sunsets, and is conveniently located near several hiking trails. However, campers should come prepared for windy and cold conditions, as well as the absence of firewood.

I have been camping at Sugarloaf over 30 years and it is by far my favorite campground in the area. The camp host Scott was very welcoming and did a fantastic job. The restrooms were all clean and stocked well. The camp site was clean in preparation for our arrival and overall the campground was also very clean. With ample hiking and fishing within close proximity this campground will continue to be a go to for my family in the future.

Great campground, right at tree line, incredible setting below the eastern face of the Snowy Range. Super clean bathrooms.

This is a beautiful campground, and we had an excellent camp host. The site (12) is a great location. The prevailing wind blows any dust away from the site. The camp sites are a little closer together than at other NFS camps in the area. Sufficient wood is available for your camp fire. A bow saw or axe would be useful to have. There is a view of the lake and peaks to the North, and of course a million stars.

  • Check-out is at 1:00 p.m.
  • Campsite is released if the reservation holder does not show up on the first day.
  • Print your reservation and display it on your vehicle’s dash; it acts as a voucher for day use sites.

Cancellation policy

  • Reservation fees are non-refundable. For campsites, cabins, lookouts, yurts, group sites, and similar stays, we charge a reservation service fee of $8.
  • Standard cancellations usually have a $10 cancellation fee. Customers can generally cancel before the check-in date online.
  • Late cancellation rules differ by stay type.
    • Individual campsites: cancelling after 12:00am local time the day before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
    • Cabins, lookouts, and yurts: cancelling less than 14 days before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
    • One-night reservations: a late cancellation usually forfeits the full amount paid, up to the total original reservation cost.
  • Modifications are allowed before the cut-off window, but fees depend on the change. Changing to dates completely outside the original reservation dates may trigger a $10 change fee. Extending or shortening a stay that still includes original dates usually has no change fee, though refunds may depend on timing and facility rules. Switching to the same type of campsite for the same dates usually has no change fee, but price differences are charged or refunded.
  • Early departures may or may not be refunded. At certain facilities, partial refunds may be possible if staff can mark the site available for other visitors. No refund is given for a night if the early departure is requested after that day's check-out time.
