We only stayed 1 night here on a trip south, but would have loved to stay longer. We stayed at Site 6, and it was laid out great. There is a spacious deck between the parking spot and the river, with steps down to the river bank. We thoroughly enjoyed sitting out on the deck enjoying the river view. Turtles were lined up on logs soaking up the sun, herons were fishing, and the sunset over the river was beautiful.
There is a dam and a lock upstream to accommodate the barge traffic on the Black Warrior River between Mobile and Birmingham, and while sitting on the deck at night, we could hear the engine and see the lights of a tugboat going downstream in the dark. It looked huge from the array of lights on the back, but we couldn’t see the boat itself. Very cool!
It’s definitely one of the best campsites we’ve ever had, and we’ve had a zillion!

Beautiful campsite, peaceful as no cell service. The road getting to the campsite was very windy and hilly and even though is was 15 miles took 40 minutes to access the highway. If you are looking for a place to unplug and unwind this would be the spot. Beware, take time to look at the water sites closely so you can ensure your door will face the river.

Very remote, recommend fueling up and buying groceries before heading into this spot. No AT&T cell service/internet at all. Waterfront sites are a bit tricky for larger rigs. Our camper van with kayak trailer made it into the site OK but I would be cautious reserving sites here with a longer trailer. Drone of coal mining operations can be heard 24/7 and coal barges move up and down river. No stores along Lock 17 road (about 15 miles long) back to campground.

With the exception of the hookups being on the wrong side, everything else was great!

The campground host was Excellent, helping me back into a difficult spot. The bathhouse was the most beautiful outside and in that I have ever seen - ACE designed? The only caveat is that ‘no cell service’ is an understatement. For first time ever got a ‘SOS only’ message! But 1-2 miles out you can get a signal.

Off the beaten path so bring what you need with you. Nice concrete pads. Sites 1-8 on water and rest on creek. All are very nice. Shower house in loop on creek, only toilets near waterfront sites. Staff very friendly and helpful. Gate code for Campground loops. 3 fishing piers, swim area, boat ramp and play area in day use and camp loop on creek. Water and electricity. Dump station.
