About Portal Ccc House

The Portal CCC House is a five-room cabin located just west of Portal, Arizona. The fieldstone masonry cabin has been determined eligible for the National Register of Historic Places and is one of the few remaining structures from the 1930s-era Cave Creek Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) Camp. The CCC House was built to serve as the camp's garage; the large vehicle entries were later filled in and the structure was converted to housing for a telephone switchboard and its operator. While the historic appearance has been maintained on the exterior, the interior was remodeled to provide modern amenities for visitors.

The CCC Portal Cabin is a charming two-bedroom stone cabin with an open living area and kitchen. The kitchen appeared clean and recently remodeled, and was well equipped with a double stainless sink, microwave, electric range/oven, 12 cup coffee maker, toaster, and a solid selection of pots, pans, dishes, and silverware. There were also baking pans, a cookie sheet, and useful gadgets like a corkscrew, scissors, cheese grater, and hot pads. Thoughtful previous guests left coffee filters, salt and pepper, a few seasonings, matches, and battery-powered fire starters. Still no can opener! The bathroom also appeared recently remodeled and included a sink, toilet, and walk in shower. There were three rolls of toilet paper available. Sleeping arrangements include one bedroom with a queen and a twin bed, and a second bedroom with a queen bed (which also serves as the entry room, as it contains the front door). All beds had mattress pads and were comfortable. The living area includes a dining table with four wood chairs, along with books and puzzles. There is no sofa or other upholstered seating anywhere in the cabin. Outside, there is a small patio with a metal table and chairs, a picnic table, and a gas grill with an LP tank. However, the grill was not operational during our stay—the internal components had been removed, apparently due to bear damage last fall (per the cabin log). There is no fire ring, and I understand external fires are not permitted. Inside, the cabin has a wood stove, though we relied instead on the electric oil heaters, which warmed the space effectively. We did need to reset a couple of breakers to get the wall-mounted heaters working. While there are a two nearby RVs used by welcome center staff, they are barely noticeable from the cabin. Overall, we found the cabin clean, modern, and full of rustic charm—and the location and surrounding scenery absolutely spectacular.

I enjoyed my stay and would stay again.
Wi-Fi from the visitor center was available until 3:30pm daily which helped me as I am a T Mobile customer. Excellent access to the area. Thank you for maintaining this facility for public use!

This was an excellent experience. Lovely lovely place. I wish there was a can opener in the kitchen tools.

The setting was fantastic with all the cliffs in clear view. In December the cabin was chilly but heated up quickly with the heaters. We loved the wood stove which made for cozy evenings. The kitchen was very well equipped. The books on the corner table were wonderful to learn about the area. Even though it was cold out, the south facing patio was warm in the afternoon and provided a perfect spot to sit with a hot beverage after hiking. We hiked the south fork Cave Creek trail and were amazed at the variety of plants, trees and desert flora along the way. Incomparable beauty! We also hiked trails at the end of the road past the research station and were delighted to find two waterfalls.

Policies & Rules

General

  • Pets are NOT permitted inside or outside the cabin. Unfortunately, due to a history of pet owners inadequately cleaning up after their pets, pets are no longer allowed. Forest Service staff have limited time to complete weekly cabin cleaning. Cleaning service is not cost effective due to the rural location of the cabins. Eliminating the need to vacuum pet hair, neutralize odors, and pick up poop frees up staff time to cleaning cabin amenities and address repair needs.
  • Access to the cabin is via a driveway on the east side of the facility, accessible by passenger car. The house key is located in a lock box on the front door nearest to the parking area. The combination for the lock box is provided once a reservation is made.
  • A cabin manual is located inside the cabin to answer specific questions during your stay as well as provide you with information on recreation opportunities in the area.
  • Cleaning service is NOT provided. Before leaving, renters are expected to clean the cabin; this includes washing dishes, sweeping floors, wiping down countertops, cleaning the bathroom & shower, and removing ALL trash.
  • Guests MUST provide some of their own supplies including: food, sleeping bags, linens, pillows, towels, dish soap, matches, a first aid kit, toilet paper and garbage bags.
  • Please do NOT flush anything but toilet paper to prevent clogs or damage to the septic system.
  • Keep the building and grounds clean to deter squirrel, rodents, bears, and other wildlife from the area.
  • Cell phone coverage is usually available in the area, but may be unreliable in the cabin.
  • The house is located in a desert environment; please be aware that scorpions, snakes, and other insects may be present at any time.
  • Off-Highway vehicles are only allowed on designated roads and trails.
  • The cabin is a no-smoking facility.
  • Access is subject to weather conditions.
  • This cabin does not honor Golden Age Discounts.
