About Portal Ccc House

The Portal CCC House is a five-room cabin located just west of Portal, Arizona. The fieldstone masonry cabin has been determined eligible for the National Register of Historic Places and is one of the few remaining structures from the 1930s-era Cave Creek Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) Camp. The CCC House was built to serve as the camp's garage; the large vehicle entries were later filled in and the structure was converted to housing for a telephone switchboard and its operator. While the historic appearance has been maintained on the exterior, the interior was remodeled to provide modern amenities for visitors.

What Guests Are Saying

The CCC Portal Cabin is a charming and clean two-bedroom stone cabin located in a beautiful setting within the Chiricahua Mountains, ideal for nature lovers and hikers. Guests appreciated the well-equipped kitchen, comfortable beds, and the cozy ambiance provided by the wood stove. However, some noted the lack of living room furniture and the non-operational grill, along with minor electrical issues, which could enhance the overall experience.

It was much cuter than the photos. The porch in back was a piece of heaven at night we watched the stars at night and the Mountain Views were stunning. It made us feel cozy snuggled close to the Mountains. I am glad there is a fence we had Javalina come visit in the late afternoon. Bring your own bed sheets. The grill worked and toilets worked it wasnt super clean but we expect that. We cleaned before we left. Its right off the road and so you can walk across the road and take a stroll. We did some hiking near by. Lots of Birds and a quail lives near by in a bush. It was perfect for two of us. Shower felt great. It was windy one day so we stayed inside. Very Sunny. We will return. We saw and heard mice too.

Loved the location. Suberb view from back patio. Great hot shower. Well equipped kitchen. Wood burning stove was nice touch. The cabin was comfortably rustic and peaceful.

This cabin is awesome, very modernized inside. The heater in the living room makes noise and needs repair and as usual with all these gov cabins the curtins are too thin, add some insulated black out curtins or bring some with ya, also bring an extra electric heater. Wood stove works good but takes some work. Area is amazing, check it out. Oh and the lighting is very very dim for some reason, just bring a camp lantern or something if that bother you.

Cave Creek Canyon is always awesome, so our stay was excellent. The cabin itself was comfortable and warm.
Our only complaint and why I didn’t give 5 stars is that the cabin smelled of cigarette smoke when we arrived and the place was in need of a good cleaning.

Clean and comfy place on the edge of the national forest and Chiricahua Sky Islands. Stayed over Christmas '21. Somewhat drafty. The flat futon-bed in the backroom is more springs than padding, some of the dishes and coffee cups need to be replaced due to chips, and the bathroom sink faucet has a constant leak. No bottle opener and not enough glassware. Otherwise, plenty of wood available for the fireplace, appliances and gas grill worked like a charm for our Christmas Ribeyes and baked potatos. Found some nice board games in the bunkroom. Wall heaters had a learning curve, but worked well enough. Did not have the secluded feel due to camper trailers parked particularly close by. For four people, we were not crowded and enjoyed our stay.

we really enjoyed our stay at5 the house. it was very clean and the rangers were very helpful. I recommend taking fire wood to use in the stove as it is kind of hit and miss with that. our dogs also love it there!

Cave Creek Canyon is beyond gorgeous! We have been blessed to stay in this cabin several times in the last 3-4 years. Our Thanksgiving stay this year was lovely. The cabin was clean when we arrived, which was much appreciated. We brought firewood and enjoyed the wood fire stove in the living/dining area. There was a leak in the sink of the bathroom which we reported. The views from back are humbling and the stars at night from the front almost seem fake. Bring hand soap and cleaning supplies. One of the best cabin's ever!

It is a very cozy and nice place to stay. We had the wood burning heater on most of the night, which was a delight.
You should bring your own sheets, blankets, toiletries, matches, and anything you want to cook. It has a full kitchen, which is nice. They also provide a propane grill out back, if you plan on using it. No cell service or internet, which, in my opinion, is the best part.
I can't wait to return.
