About Bonito Campground (AZ)

Bonito Campground is located 18 miles northeast of Flagstaff, near Sunset Crater/Wupatki National Monument. Elevation is 6,900 feet. Bonito Campground is named for the Bonito Lava Flow which oozed across this high desert plain some 900 years ago. That river of liquid rock, now frozen forever, is just one of the many remnants of volcanic activity which lend an otherwordly appearance to this starkly beautiful place.

Great Campground, site was huge and bathrooms were clean. Lots of trees and shade. Great view of the mountains when you drive to sunset Crater. Didn't see the Wupatki national Monument but it was very close as well. There is potable water by the bathroom. No showers though. No cell service as soon as you drive into the Campground. The ground is all crushed pumice which was a cool feature of the now dormant volcano. Since it's crushed pumice there was no mud when it rained

What a dumpster fire! Seriously - I was just finishing setup on my trailer when I looked up and saw smoke pouring out of the dumspter across from my site. I grabbed my 5 gal bucket and got some water on the embers that had re-ignited! The camp hosts came up quickly and helped douse the fire with their buckets! What a way to start the trip.

This is an awesome campground - extremely quiet, very spacious, very clean and the camp hosts are very cordial and attentive. We hadn't been onsite 5 minutes before they rolled up asking if we needed anything and let us change our reserved location for one of the first-come sites that had more shade. It turns out that little change may have prevented a small dumpster fire from becoming a really big problem. We look forward to staying here again, as soon as it cools off.

Bonito is a lovely pine-forested campground. The hosts Elaine and her husband were wonderful! Bathrooms were spotless and the campground itself was generally quiet. Will definitely come back for another stay!
