About Bonito Campground (AZ)

Bonito Campground is located 18 mi northeast of Flagstaff, near Sunset Crater/Wupatki National Monument. Elevation is 6.9 ft. Bonito Campground is named for the Bonito Lava Flow which oozed across this high desert plain some 900 years ago. That river of liquid rock, now frozen forever, is just one of the many remnants of volcanic activity which lend an otherwordly appearance to this starkly beautiful place.

As usual, Bonita Campground was lovely to visit! Our spot, #40 was perfect and we had the attraction seeing camel's for the talk on Saturday night! All in all, wonderful!

Right next to lava flows. Way gnarly.

Sites are huge so spreading out is easy.

Super-clean bathrooms.

Camp hosts deserve huge props. Very kind and helpful.

Bonito is a quiet and peaceful campground during the week days. It is a very well maintained campground. It is set in the Pine forest North East of Flagstaff. Verizon and T-Mobile cell phone service is practically non existent.

We’ve stayed here several times and have always found it quiet and peaceful. We have only stayed one night at a time as it’s always along our journey out of the state. The walk over to the lava flow is lovely.

Beautiful setting, spacious sites and a great location to experience several other parks and monuments. The ranger programs are a great source of information and entertainment.

Campground is beautiful and the individual sites are large, with plenty of space in between. Hosts Sandy and Frank were very kind and accommodating.

Drive 12 mi northeast of Flagstaff on US 89. Turn east (right) on FR 545 (toward Sunset Crater) and drive 2 mi to Bonito Campground. Campground entrance is just before the entrance station of Sunset Crater National Monument
