About Mather Campground

Due to high demand, Mather Campground recommends reservations during peak season: March 1- November 30. You may book reservations up to 6 months in advance. Mather Campground is on the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona. Grand Canyon is one of the most inspiring landscapes on Earth and draws over five million visitors per year to its spectacular scenery. Mather Campground is large and can accommodate a variety of needs and comfort levels. It is the only campground within Grand Canyon Village. Scenic overlooks, the park's free shuttle bus system, the Visitor Center, the general store and hiking and biking trails are all within a few miles of the campground.. The campground is at an elevation of approximately 7,000 ft. (2134 m). Summers are sunny with high temperatures generally in the 80s. Thunderstorms frequently occur in July, August, and early September. Fall and spring are mostly sunny and cool with occasional snow. Visitors should come prepared for changes in weather.

We were having a great time camping in sites 170 and 171 until on the second to last day of our reservation, we returned back to our tents only to find out that there were to be no campfires and the water spigots ( not the toilets or sinks in the bathroom), were shut off with no prior warning. It was a camper nearby us that informed us. Apparently, a sign was posted sometime during that day outside of the bathroom door, hanging way above eyesight - unless you are 7+ feet tall. Very disappointing. Thank goodness we had enough water in our buckets to make until the next morning. We then packed out.

Reservation was easy. We arrived after hours and the instructions to set up camp were clear and reassuring. We went straight to our site, set up, and we were sound asleep in no time.
This site was really nice. Away from the street, big space so you aren't bumping into neighbors, close to the restroom but not too close so we didn't hear noises or people coming and going. Just the perfect spot.

We even had some friendly elk walk by in the morning during breakfast. They must be used to the area. The elk and human neighbors were so chill. Plenty of room for elk family to walk close enough to be in community with us, and enough space so no one was in danger.

There needs to be restrictions on all the lights, along with quiet hours there needs to be “dark“ hours so those of us who enjoy sitting around our campsite stargazing can actually see the stars without the intrusive glow of other campsites. The Grand Canyon is, after all, part of the Dark Skies initiative.

Excellent experience! Exceptional service at the office. Lot of trees (difficult to have a steady Starlink connection). Shuttle stops near the campground and the market plaza is walking distance

Campground was very clean and well situated. Great location and easy to walk to all the main stops (grocery store, lodge, bus stops to trailheads), safe for kids to ride their bikes around. Only situation was dishwashing station was closed which I was not prepared for but probably could have read in advance. Look at times that water is turned on/off for better planning.
