About Mather Campground

Due to high demand, Mather Campground recommends reservations during peak season: March 1- November 30. You may book reservations up to 6 months in advance. Mather Campground is on the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona. Grand Canyon is one of the most inspiring landscapes on Earth and draws over five million visitors per year to its spectacular scenery. Mather Campground is large and can accommodate a variety of needs and comfort levels. It is the only campground within Grand Canyon Village. Scenic overlooks, the park's free shuttle bus system, the Visitor Center, the general store and hiking and biking trails are all within a few miles of the campground.. The campground is at an elevation of approximately 7,000 ft. (2134 m). Summers are sunny with high temperatures generally in the 80s. Thunderstorms frequently occur in July, August, and early September. Fall and spring are mostly sunny and cool with occasional snow. Visitors should come prepared for changes in weather.

While we understand the fire restriction due to water infrastructure upgrades currently on going, it was raining and sleeting while we were there. There was no fire danger at the time and having a fire to warm by would've ideal. Otherwise, we enjoyed our stay.

We have been coming to the Grand Canyon group camping site at Mather for many years. It is a pleasure to deal with the park personnel at the main gate as well as the camping ground. They are so helpful and friendly to deal with. The campgrounds are always clean as are the nearby bathrooms. There are also water spigots for potable water along with a nearby building with showered and a laundromat. Unfortunately those services were unavailable due to a water pipe breakage on the North Kaibab trail. Fortunately, there was water in the bathrooms as well as the trailer dump station nearby. All in all it was a great experience for all of our AFS high school exchange students.

It was nice to be able to camp in the National Park and have quick access to the Grand Canyon. My campsite was large and roomy, there was a nice amount of separation between campsites, and it had a big place to pull my vehicle out of the main road. It was also nice to have a dumpster nearby to dispose of trash. My campsite was at the west end of Fir Loop which is adjacent to Market Plaza Road, which has a fair amount of traffic. This is not so bad, but the road has strips in it to alert drivers as they approach the stop sign and the sound of cars driving over those strips was quite noisy, and it happens at all hours.

Great location for home base at Grand Canyon. Easy access to shuttle bus and canyon rim trails. Good bathroom facilities. Our stay was complicated by fire restrictions power outages and high winds. Nonetheless we were abke to visit most of the areas throughout using the shuttle system.
