What Guests Are Saying
Panther Flat Campground is a well-maintained and clean facility, featuring hot coin showers, flushing toilets, and spacious campsites that provide good privacy. Campers appreciate the friendly hosts and the beautiful natural surroundings, including access to the nearby Smith River and hiking trails. While it can get busy in the summer and occasional noise from other campers or road traffic is noted, many visitors still find it a pleasant and enjoyable camping experience overall.

Panther Flat Campground was quiet, except for the sound of the Smith River. To me, a wonderful noise, and it drowned out the highway above the campground.
Sites were isolated enough, my site had a good pad size through it's not easy to drive tent stakes into that rocky soil amalgamation.
The campground is not on the river, but above it. If you have difficulty walking or you use a mobility device, the campground's short trail to the river won't work. You'll have to take a vehicle to get to see the river, or you'll have to go down to the day use area via the passenger vehicle access. The best sites in that case would be those closest to the park entrance.

A nice camp overall. Bathrooms are always stocked. The river is just down the hill. This particular campsite,16, is entirely sloped from the road back to a steep embankment. My 10 and 5-year-old did fine, but any younger and I think I would have been watching closely. Also, something to think about if you have multiple tents, because there are really only two flat spots.
This site is flanked directly next to it by the main path to the river. Expect people up and down at all hours. If you're a big party group this one and 17 could be a fun combo, but if you're looking for a quiet spot for your family this isn't it.
At this campground, pretty much all odd numbers 1-17 will be near the slopes drop-off, and maybe the numbers higher as well. There were people up partying until 2-3 and lots of weed smoking, and people drinking to loud drunkenness. Again, if that's what you're after it would be great, if you have sensitive sound sleepers this probably won't work for you.

I loved the this campground. It was not only heavily wooded but the campsites were fairly private too. The camp host was a very nice person and he kept the bathrooms and campsites very clean. The location can not be beat! I could hike in the redwoods and walk the beaches in Crescent City. Great fish and chips on the beach and Ice cream from the CC Diner. I will be back again next year for sure.

I reserved four sites for our family. We had a 30 foot fifth wheel, a 22 foot trailer, two Cabover campers pulling jeeps. Everyone commented on how nice a campground it was. The campsites are well spaced, with privacy. The showers and restroom facilities were clean. The staff was exceptionally helpful and welcoming. We will be there again!

Such a perfect spot to stay for a night or two. Be prepared for mosquitoes, and wear river-appropriate footwear if you don’t want to slip all over the rocks at the river! We will definitely camp here again, and hope that all campers treat this area with love and respect. The Smith River is something special.
