So our timing was strange and we drove in a a short time after the Windy Fire started. This is our FAVORITE Kern River Campground. Great sites, clean bathrooms, and our favorite ever camp host, Mark and his dog Ms Pickles. So we camped in pretty wild conditions, the southern edge of the fire was only 18 miles away. We felt well informed on everything rated to the fire, safe, and were still able to make the best of it with a clear blue sky day in the River. Always recommend this campground.

Some spots are right next to the river, some are right next to the road. Traffic was very light, though, and no loud trucks. Mosquitos weren't as bad as expected, maybe due to river running fairly low this spring. Water was cold but shallow enough that one could safely play in the river, again due to low water. No glass containers allowed in the campground - I forgot and had brought my own beer, and got called out on it (respectfully and gently) by the camp host. He also saw me walking later that day though and mentioned that a better site closer to the river had opened up, if I wanted to move to it, which was thoughtful. Great location of campground is a few minutes' drive from the general store, and river access is right there. Can also drive a little further - your choice of how far - for more river access points, nearby hiking, photography, etc. Loved this spot and would go again.

It was a great Experience over all, accept one day in the morning of 7/23/21 at campsite 44 the fire ants were out and about scouting for food and they were everywhere while we were trying to cook and eat breakfast, after the morning ant "rush" was over it calmed down. The best campsites for this camp ground is 25, 24, 23 & 21.
