What Guests Are Saying
Butte Lake Campground offers a beautiful, quiet location with clean facilities, access to hiking trails, and a serene atmosphere surrounded by nature. Many visitors enjoyed the stunning views, wildlife interactions, and recreational options like kayaking and swimming. However, concerns were raised about the rough access road, lack of cell service, and limited information or support on-site, which could impact the overall camping experience.

Campground is easy to use, relatively quiet, and un crowded. Good home base for hikes like the cinder cone.

The nearly seven mile dirt road is accessible by most cars. There are smooth parts and washboard conditions in other parts. The problem is that some drivers treat it like an off-raod race track and that creates a lot of dust and projectile gravel. There needs to be a sign that states "Drive Slowy to Prevent Heavy Dust and Flying Rocks" once you get to the campground. Other than that, the campground is adjacent to hiking and biking trails and down the road there are forest roads for motorcycles, ATVs, and even regular sedans. The cold lake water is tolerable for some swimming. The hiking trails offer some great views of snow covered Lassen Peak and other volcano domes. It is worth the drive on the long dirt road.

Fantastic campsite! The six-mile gravel road in was a non-issue, the nearby Cinder Cone hike was fantastic, and the campground itself was superb. We'll be back!

Butte Lake is a beautiful campground in the vicinity of (in my opinion) the best national park. I was a little confused why all the smaller restrooms were closed the last weekend of June (especially given the campground was full) but otherwise, it was a great stay. It was a great spot.

Pleasant camp ground - sites are well spaced, restrooms are clean and trash picked up on a regular basis. There is some interesting hiking and the lake is lovely (great for cooling off!)
Unfortunately, generators are allowed and there is no way to know if you will be camping close to one.
The camp can get dusty as some people drive their vehicles too fast on the gravel/dust roads of the campground.
