Site A-30 was closed due to hazardous trees in the campground. We were directed to an alternate site far from our adjacent A-29 reservation. You provided a refund for site A-30 after we returned and I appreciate that. It was just unfortunate that this issue was not reflected in the reservation system.

This site was next to A-30 which we had also reserved, but A-30 was closed by park staff due to hazardous trees. We had planned to use both sites for a family event, but had to only use A-29. Site is large with lots of trees, but rather exposed to afternoon full sun. Water available at the restroom areas and flush toilets functional. NPS staff clean restrooms and trash daily. No host or ranger present. Lake is great.

Excellent!
Beautiful, quiet location. Clean bathrooms. Campground seemed less full than others in the park. Trailhead for the Cinder Cone trail begins right at the campground and lake is really nice. Will definitely be going again. Highly recommended.

Loved it. Group campsites were noisy til 10, but quiet after that. Hikes were great, camp sites were clean, toilets were as clean as they could be for the weekend 😁. Who owns that washboard road into the camp!! That’s ridiculous! But we all go slow, don’t we? Enjoyed by all in my group.

Overall I liked the site I had. Was big and with lots of spots to put my tent. Flush toilets, no lights in bathroom. Sink for dishes. Each of them seemed a bit uneven, but it's nature. Yes I could see all the sites around me, but each space seemed big.
It was quiet when I was there. I was able to walk to the lake and nearby trails. Though you do get people racing by on the road, headed for the lake.
I do agree with others about the road. Though that is not in the volcanic park part. Of course you still have to go 5 miles to get to the smoother drive. A few times I had to slow way down for how hard it shook. Aside from the walks around there, going out of the park you can reach a store near old station. And the subway lava tubes. Would definitely go and stay again.

Nice campground close to butte lake with clean restrooms and washroom with a sink and faucet. Had a great time using a SUP on the lake. Only issue is that the road to the campground is not paved so unless you have an off road vehicle, it’s good to drive slowly.

From Redding, California drive 63 miles east on State Highway 44 to Old Station. From the intersection of 44 and State Highway 89, continue east on 44 for 11 miles. Watch for sign to Butte Lake Campground. Turn right and continue for six miles on a rough gravel road.

Policies & Rules
Cancellation policy
- Reservation fees are non-refundable. For campsites, cabins, lookouts, yurts, group sites, and similar stays, we charge a reservation service fee of $8.
- Standard cancellations usually have a $10 cancellation fee. Customers can generally cancel before the check-in date online.
- Late cancellation rules differ by stay type.
- Individual campsites: cancelling after 12:00am local time the day before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
- Cabins, lookouts, and yurts: cancelling less than 14 days before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
- One-night reservations: a late cancellation usually forfeits the full amount paid, up to the total original reservation cost.
- Modifications are allowed before the cut-off window, but fees depend on the change. Changing to dates completely outside the original reservation dates may trigger a $10 change fee. Extending or shortening a stay that still includes original dates usually has no change fee, though refunds may depend on timing and facility rules. Switching to the same type of campsite for the same dates usually has no change fee, but price differences are charged or refunded.
- Early departures may or may not be refunded. At certain facilities, partial refunds may be possible if staff can mark the site available for other visitors. No refund is given for a night if the early departure is requested after that day's check-out time.
- Security deposits are separate. Security deposits may be refunded to the original payment method if the facility is left in acceptable condition, as determined by the property.
