About Horse Campground

Horse Camp is located on the eastern shore of the Little Grass Valley Reservoir, giving visitors ample opportunity to fish, swim, boat and enjoy nature. The camp is one of eight campgrounds in the area, but the only one equipped to handle equestrian campers. It provides access to a beautiful, adjacent mountain lake and various hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding trails that meander through the scenic hills and valleys.

What Guests Are Saying

Horse Campground offers a beautiful area for camping with easy access to water and great sites for large groups. Many visitors enjoyed their time and found the campsites suitable for their needs. However, there are some concerns regarding the maintenance of the bathrooms, accessibility for larger vehicles, and the accuracy of GPS directions.

Great campground and trails. The sites are very spacious. Sites 1, 5 and 9 are tent camping which it doesn't state on the reservation system. Plenty of room for large rigs. Lots of trees for hi-lining or portable corrals. The reservoir is within walking distance for some water fun. The only drawback is the road to get there.

It was strange that we were the only campers there with horses, but no one did anything to spook them so it worked out. There is a hand pump- to get water, nice trail, and very near a shallow end of the lake.
The only drawback was all the dirt. The roads are dirt and people tend to drive fast on it creating a lot of dust. Many people just drove through the circle and left, maybe to see where the trail was or scouting for camping or swimming places. Kind of annoying since they made a lot of dust coming through.

Dates: 7/2/22 through 7/5/22
Campsite: 003

Horse Camp is a great campground and I would highly recommend coming back. The campground has ~10 sites, two vaulted toilets, and a potable water pump. We stayed Saturday through Tuesday, over the Fourth of July holiday. On Saturday and Sunday nights, approximately 50% of the sites were occupied. There was no camp host on site, however we saw a few National Forest Service personnel drive through, and the bathrooms / dumpsters were tended to during our stay.

The campground is steps away from the Bald Mountain trailhead; a 5 mile out-and-back moderate hike, with ~1,150' of climbing. Some of the sites have views of the nearby Grass Valley Reservoir; all of the sites are within a 5 minute walk of the reservoir. The reservoir is great for SUP'ing, fishing, and swimming.

All of the sites had fire rings and new Bear boxes. The Bear boxes are the type with a flat top (which is great for having additional work surfaces for cooking, etc.

Google Map directions to the campground are pretty accurate. We drove in from La Porte and the campground was accessible via a sedan. We will definitely come back to Horse Camp!
