What Guests Are Saying
Hayward Flat Campground offers a beautiful setting with stunning lake views and clean, well-kept campsites, making it a great destination for families and outdoor enthusiasts. Many visitors enjoyed kayaking and appreciated the peaceful atmosphere, with some noting the campground's proximity to trails. However, there were concerns about restroom cleanliness and maintenance, as well as issues with overcrowding and bee activity. Overall, while there are areas for improvement, many campers expressed a desire to return for the natural beauty and recreational opportunities.

The photos on Recreation.gov were somewhat misleading as the terrain was much steeper in the Elderberry Loop where we camped in site 89. The men's restroom was clean, but the woman's was a mess. We did not find or see a Campground host during our three day stay.

This was a long 6 hour drive for us. Upon arrival we found another vehicle from our neighbors parked in our spot. We eventually tracked down the people and they said they parked it there because they didn’t want to pay extra for a vehicle. So they moved and we started to get set up. Luckily the small driveway was just big enough for our tent trailer and our truck. The other few sites around us we way to small and at a steep Slope. We soon noticed that there were blue and black painted stripes on almost every tree there. There was lots of trash around and the same car neighbor had trash thrown all on the ground behind his truck. Once we got settled we couldn’t help notice the yellow jackets. There were thousands and the campground even had a trap hanging. The two nights was hard to sleep due to the same neighbors (3 sites, large group) running their generators all night. We asked if they could be turned off and was told sure and then they went off for 1 hour at 11pm and then for a bit between 4-5am. Thankfully they left and our last night there was nice and quiet, besides the crows at 6am. The bathrooms were dirty, no toilet paper, no hand soap although my son said there was some in the men’s bathroom. But men’s bathroom also had a ton of toilet paper outside the building. The last day/night the bathroom was cleaned still no soap. It looked like there was an overflow issue at the bathrooms. The two stars are for the lake, great temperature and clean and the beautiful scenery on the lake. There were barely any people there so it felt like our own private lake most days. The marina staff was friendly. This is a must have a boat kinda camping. It would had been horrible if we couldn’t escape the site all day. I would probably return but only I’m a houseboat.

The bee's were unbearable, we were unable to cook or eat outside, many in our group were stung at least once some several times.

Campsite was clean but very compact. Room for maybe 2 tents and only 2 vehicles if you squeeze. If you need more space, get a double. We ended up getting an adjacent spot since there were 7 of us and we weren't all sharing tents. There was no bear bin at this site (or at any site on the inner part of the loop, I believe). Lake access from the elderberry loop is great. There were a LOT of yellowjackets, so not recommended if you're squeamish or allergic. Not sure how other campsites are, but they were even down by the lake in small numbers. Would rate higher but for the yellowjackets. It was a beautiful site and we had a great time.

Site B20 has no bear box like every other site and several campers wander through the site. One bathroom was pleasant, and the other one was clogged and the individual that came to "clean" it did nothing to resolve the issue. Trash cans were overflowing with trash.
