Azalea Campground

Short drive from the General Grant Tree and Hume Lake. Have to drive a bit to get to Three Kings River/Boyden Cavern & General Sherman Tree/Moro Rock. Overall, a very good experience, most sites were spacious and clean and had everything you need.

I would advise not to take site 15. It is literally in a culvert. Two large drainage pipes, one on each side of the campsite. If it rains you will have a problem.

Large campsite. Restrooms and dumpster are very close by. Grant grove hiking trail and visitor center is accessible from the campsite on foot. Not a completely flat campsite though so expect your tent to be a little sloped

The campsite itself is great, if a little crowded. Depending on which site you get there is not much space in between campsites. Due to it's location right by the Kings Canyon visitor center, Azalea is very much a family campsite, so it may not be the best option if you are looking for seclusion in the Sequoias. Lots of kids yelling and running around. I can't get mad at kids for being kids in the outdoors, but depending on what you're hoping your trip to be like you may want to consider a campsite a little further into the park.

While most other campers were respectful, there were a few people blasting music, and I do get upset about that. When my wife walked over and very politely asked them to turn it down she was met with profanity and called racist. This is just ridiculous behavior. I do wish the national parks would ban speakers outright. People go to the parks to get away from the noise and hustle of the city, not to be subjected to more of the same. Banning speakers would also avoid these types of very unpleasant interactions with rude people.

All that said, Azalea is nestled in the midst of the trees with General Grant (and several other giant sequoias) just a 15 minute walk away, so it really is a nice spot particularly if you have kids.

I stayed in a tent loop, but I have a VAN RV and was fine. Rangers allowed us to remain. The campsite and location, as well as the beauty of the park were great. I can't help but feel that the National Park Service support and care didn't seem to be at the same high level it usually is. All of the campsites were identified as reserved even though many remained empty. Quite a few campgrounds were closed, partially expected because of the mid to end of September time frame. Many Coronavirus pandemic policies were still in place, no service in the restaurant in Grant Village, Lodgepole Visitor center and most services were closed all season and remained closed.
