Moraine Campground (CA)

This was my first time to visit Kings Canyon. It was just my wife and me. We were tent camping. I'd like to have ranked our visit as excellent or very good, but I had to rank it as good instead. Reasons why were 1) large group set up as a party camp playing music, 2) heavy bear activity included them turning over trash dumpsters adjacent to our campsite, and 3) ours and most campgrounds were on a slope, unfortunately the way many campgrounds were originally built. We loved the river for soaking and for enhancing the views all around (the path from our campsite to the river was treacherous. however, we did find good access by a short drive). We had a great hike up to Mist falls. Overall, we had a very good time.

Great views from the canyon bottom. Large flat sites plenty of room. Our site was near the river and it was very peaceful. Highly recommend

Nice enough campground in a convenient location for Kings Canyon trailhead. Bear(s) in campground. Neighbors a couple sites down were honking their car horns all night in I guess an attempt to scare it away, so I got terrible sleep. People had put trash in the "ash only" Oscar-the-Grouch style cans and the bear tipped it and made a mess at some point during the night which didn't help. Some more education about dealing with the bears to the casual family campers would be good.

Minimal shade. We had full sun almost all day.

Moraine Campground is a great location in Sequoia / Kings Canyon NP. About 10 minutes from Road's End, so it's perfect for a pre-backpacking overnight stay for those intending to hike the ~41 mi Rae Lakes Loop. Facilities were well kept / functioning well at the time of our stay. Just a friendly reminder to stay bear aware and keep your food away from them and other critters!

Very spacious and beautiful. The river was refreshing and crisp! There was bear activity every night of our visit. Some more ranger presence would have been appreciated though we were ultimately very safe and had a community of other campers to help. Parking was mid.

We had a great time! It’s a decent-sized campground with lots of things to see, including beautiful views, trails, and the river. You can also hike down to the river, which was really refreshing to cool off in after hiking on a hot summer day.
There are flushable toilets, but the toilet paper is so hard to pull out, and it rips easily because it’s only one-ply. One of the women’s restroom doors has no lock, so you have to hold it closed while doing your business. Our fire pit was in really bad shape and definitely needs to be replaced. Cedar Grove Village is about a 10-minute drive away. There’s a store where you can get snacks, ice, and beer, and they also sell some hiking and camping gear. There’s also a restaurant with decent prices and showers, although they sometimes run out of shower tokens. Last but not least, this campground is in an active bear area. We had a bear encounter on both nights we stayed here, so beware and make sure you follow all bear-safety guidelines. Overall, it’s a great campsite, and we had a great time!

I used Moraine Campground as an overnight area to get ready to hike The Rae Lakes Loop. It is very close. We went during the end of July and the weather was very hot. I guess because of that, there were many camp spots available. The only facility we used there was the bathroom which was needing some help. Other than that, it served the purpose.

Bears are definitely present, but if you follow posted guidelines you should be fine; very nice otherwise
