About Indian Cove Group

Download the NPS app prior to visiting the park – trail maps and more! Indian Cove Campground lies amid the huge, steep rock formations for which Joshua Tree National Park is known. Because of its proximity to many rock climbing routes, it is a popular camping location for climbers. Indian Cove Group is one of three group campgrounds in the park that can be reserved year round. To get the most out of your visit Plan Like a Park Ranger  Travelers who enjoy warm, dry winters flock to Joshua Tree from October through May, when temperatures hover between 70-90 degrees during the day and drop to a 40-60 degree range at night. Summer is the park's off-season due to the uncomfortably-high desert heat. Indian Cove is at an elevation of 3,200 feet.

Large site with beautiful rock formations, right next to the bathroom. This site gets a lot of shade. The ground isn’t super level, but you can make do. This is typical for a lot of the group sites here.

Gorgeous group site! Nice opportunities to scramble over rocks adjacent to the site and to take a mini hike in the area around the campsites. We caught the sunset, which was gorgeous. We timed our trip for stargazing but the cloud cover put a stop to that. Still, we had a great stay. Plenty of picnic tables and space for tents. Restrooms were in good condition.

The campsite itself was located in a beautiful area among the rocks of Indian Cove. We had 18 in total and the kids had a lot of fun exploring. Unfortunately, we stayed in December so our site was in the shade and was especially cold all day. We ended up wandering over to adjoining empty sites and hiking trails just to get a few minutes of sun. The site was not suited for large tents as there is a limited area of flat ground and it looks like large gullies have formed from the heavy rains. We had to pitch our tent on a sloped area next to a large rock which was sheltered but hard to sleep on as we were constantly sliding down while in our sleeping bags. The other thing we noticed is that the cleanliness of the site was lacking, little bits of trash and cigarette butts were everywhere and we picked up a whole bunch of trash when we left. Additionally, when the ranger cleaned the restroom, which was greatly appreciated, the smell afterwards was very strong and we needed to leave the area as it lingered for some time. Overall, the campsite was OK but we will not be booking again for such a large group.
