Jumbo Rocks campground is simply the best spot in Joshua Tree National Park. You’ll experience amazing sunsets and unbelievable stargazing. Fantastic!

We have been surprised by this beautiful and lonely place in south ch a spectacular landscape. Toilets have been okay. For our kids it was fantastic climbing in the rocks. All in all, a definite recommendation.

So I reserved a campsite and when I entered to park entrance the staff at the booth said I had to pay $30 for a road usage fee ????
I was never informed this on my online reservation so was a bit surprised by this. Even the gate person said yeah they don’t inform online reservations of this

The campsite was clean and it was nice and big. There was actually room for more than one car. The bathrooms were clean. We had a really good experience.

As is often the case with our National Parks, the park itself was stunningly beautiful and the rangers were kind and helpful, yet we ended up near a noisy group that got confrontational with me when I asked them (after midnight) to please respect the quiet hours and their neighbors. Rangers, please watch the reservation system, when a bunch of people book 3-4 adjacent sites, they are really getting around the group camping rules, and usually this means they are being unruly and drinking and being loud all through the night.

Neat place and a comfortable site near a smelly pit toilet. Enjoyed the diversity of the park and especially the Hidden Valley walk.

I reserved this site to view the Perseids a day before its peak and I loved it. It was large, open, and private compared to the other sites in the area. Because the site is tucked away in the back, you could expect that one is going to be walking through your site (just make sure you’re not disturbing the other sites as you walk through). Having an unobstructed view of the sky was important, as I had my telescope, this site excelled at that. I liked this campsite so much, that I have already reserved it for a future date. The surrounding campsites were unoccupied when i visited, but i could see the quality of your stay being dependent on your neighbors as there are around 4 other sites in the area.
Cons:
- Further away from parking, expect a hassle if you’re carrying a lot.
- There was an ant hill taking up a pretty good tent spot, but oh well that’s just nature.
- 4 other sites in the area, I could see bad neighbors ruining the experience.
- If you care more another shade than a clear view, then this is not the site for you.

General

- Reservations are required year round and can be made the same day or up to 6 months in advance.
- A no-show customer is one who does not arrive at a campground and does not cancel the reservation by check-out (noon) time on the day after the scheduled arrival date. Staff will hold a campsite until check-out time (noon) on the day following the arrival date.
- The park allows six people, two vehicles and three tents per site, however, some sites are small and may not accommodate the maximum number of people and vehicles. See Site Details for specifics. There is no overflow parking. Trailers count as a vehicle.
- Please call 760-367-5554 for information.
- $30 per vehicle entrance fee is in addition to camping fee.
- There are no electric, water or sewer hook-ups available at individual campsites; nor is a dump station located nearby. Potable water is available at the Oasis Visitor Center, 11 miles away.
- Generator use is permitted only from 7–9 am, noon–2 pm, and 5–7 pm.
- Pets are not allowed on trails but are welcome in the campground, on any dirt road or within 100 feet of any road. Pets must be on a leash no more than 6 feet long at all times. Pets may not be left unattended or tied to an object; leaving pets in unattended vehicles is strongly discouraged – especially on warm days.
- Don’t Move Firewood: Prevent the spread of tree-killing pests by obtaining firewood near the park and burning it on-site, and do not use park vegetation, living or dead, for fuel.
- All organized events require a special use permit and must be held in designated areas; contact the Special Park Use Coordinator, jeannie_wilson@nps.gov.
- Cancelling a Reservation: Customers may cancel their reservation prior to arrival both on-line and through the call center. A $10 service fee will be withheld from any refund for a cancellation. Depending on when you cancel in relation to your arrival day, it may be considered a late cancellation. Late Cancellation Fees: A customer who cancels a reservation the day before or on the day of arrival will pay a $10.00 service fee AND forfeit the first night's use fee (not to exceed the total paid for the original reservation). Cancellations for a one-night reservation will forfeit the entire amount paid and will not be subject to an additional service fee.
- STOP THE SPREAD OF INVASIVE SPECIES. Remove plants, seeds, animals, and mud from boots, gear, pets, and vehicles. Clean your gear before entering and leaving the recreation site. Stay on designated roads and trails, and follow local guidelines for firewood. For more information visit the National Invasive Species Information Center.
- FIRE BAN fire restriction are currently in effect that prohibit charcoal fires, wood-burning fires, and charcoal grills. NO Fires! Only gas or propane stoves are permitted. Starting June 15, ending October 1st of every year.
