About Sheep Pass Group

Download the NPS app prior to visiting the park – trail maps and more! Sheep Pass Group Campground is centrally located within Joshua Tree National Park in Southern California and is easily accessible to hiking trails and rock climbing routes. It is one of three group campgrounds in the park. Towering rock formations and uniquely-shaped Joshua trees surround the facility. To get the most out of your visit Plan Like a Park Ranger Travelers who enjoy warm, dry winters flock to Joshua Tree from October through May, when temperatures hover in the 70 to 90-degree range during the day and drop to a 40 to 60-degree range at night. Summer is the park's off-season due to the uncomfortably-high desert heat. Sheep Pass is at an elevation of 4,500 feet and has a mix of both sun and shade.

Everything was organized, except for some of the visitors. There were very clearly labeled containers for sorting garbage, but there are always some folks that cannot be bothered. Also, we picked up lots of trash in our area, which is unfortunate but we did not mind doing so. Very beautiful area with great rock formations right next to the tents and parking. Thank you.

The beauty and the problem with the Sheep Pass group sites is that there is little oversight from any park rangers. Our neighbors the first night had an all out party with over 15 cars and 25+ people. They played loud music that could be heard in every other site and were up partying loudly until 1am. Several of our neighbors went climbing around in the rocks above our site at 11pm, waking up my baby with their narration of the awesome climbing moves they were making in the dark.

We love Sheep Pass because the rocks make each site secluded. Except for our partying neighbors the first night, we couldn’t hear any of the other campers around us. There are wonderful boulders for the kids to enjoy and plenty of space for pitching tents. It would be nice if park employees would at least do a quick sweep on weekend evenings to make sure groups aren’t getting out of hand. I was shocked by the large gathering and party that went on unseen in the midst of COVID concerns.

Thank you for making our stay at our favorite site at Joshua Tree. We've purchased an annual pass for all parks and look forward to our next visit at Sheep's Pass next month.
The park is getting some nice upgrades and we are so happy to know this beautiful place is there for us when we are ready.
Best regards,

Great place to camp but people from group site no 5 and 4 had a regular disco party with a DJ, extremely loud music and disco lights during the night of June 27-28. All this in the National Park and during the Covid-19 pandemic. Multiple phone calls to the police , 911, and the Park officials did not help. Nobody came, nobody react - the disco ended around 2.30 am. Nobody could sleep that night including small children from our group.

The site is perfect! In a couple nights when we stayed at site#2, neighboring sites were loud with music until early morning.
