About Sheep Pass Group

Download the NPS app prior to visiting the park – trail maps and more! Sheep Pass Group Campground is centrally located within Joshua Tree National Park in Southern California and is easily accessible to hiking trails and rock climbing routes. It is one of three group campgrounds in the park. Towering rock formations and uniquely-shaped Joshua trees surround the facility. To get the most out of your visit Plan Like a Park Ranger Travelers who enjoy warm, dry winters flock to Joshua Tree from October through May, when temperatures hover in the 70 to 90-degree range during the day and drop to a 40 to 60-degree range at night. Summer is the park's off-season due to the uncomfortably-high desert heat. Sheep Pass is at an elevation of 4,500 feet and has a mix of both sun and shade.

Gorgeous, spread-out campsites. So many boulders on which to scramble and and explore. We were in campsite #4, which we loved, but they all looked awesome. Exposed site, prepare accordingly. Central location within the park. Highly recommend. Everyone loved the experience.

The facilities themselves are good given the lack of running water anywhere inside the park. The main negative is the requirement to place tents within 25 feet of the tables and fire ring. This is ludicrous for a group site: if there are a dozen tents, they're on top of each other. I understand the need to prevent people from trampling ever-larger portions of the desert, But this is an unnecessary and even ridiculous restriction for a group site. A 100 foot limit, with the boundary clearly marked with signage, would be much more appropriate.

Great sites. Beautiful landscape. Lots of tables and a cooking surface. Got a surprise snow storm for a couple hours.

If you like high desert camping this place is for you! Freezing at night, Hot during the day and windy all night and all day. Great hiking and rock climbing. I really can't understand the booking situation, I prefer campsite # 1, 2 or 3, ended up in Site # 6 as the only available site. For 3 days straight there was only one other group in 1 of the 6 available campsites? Yet when looking online the campsites are all booked solid? So if you book the sites and don't plan on using them reschedule or get a refund So someone else can enjoy their preferred site.

One of the best experiences we have ever had camping. Site was spacious and we felt like we had a lot of privacy. Def feeling lucky to have been able to snag a spot here last minute due to a cancellation.

Spacious group site with 3 tables and large fire pit/grill. Close to Mt Ryan trailhead and Hall of Horrors, as well as dirt roads for back country exploration.

This was a great campground and spacious. Bathrooms were so new and clean. We were in campsite 3, and the only caveat was that people wanted to walk through it to get to some climbing spots. They asked, but FYI.
