About Crystal Creek Primitive Campground

This tent-only campground is located in the northwest corner of Whiskeytown National Recreation Area, 19 miles west of Redding, California, and three and a half hours north of Sacramento. Crystal Creek flows alongside each campsite. The campground stays relatively cool due to the creek and to the shade given by a canopy of fir, maple and pine. Three nearby trails lead to lovely waterfalls. The cool, clear waters of Whiskeytown Lake provide endless water activities. The picturesque mountain setting and extensive forested backcountry offer ample opportunities for hiking and biking.

Campground was closed when we arrived after driving 9 hours to get there. No email delivered beforehand to warn us. Booked it over 2 months in advance. Total waste of time and money. You need to alert people who booked and paid for a campsite if you are going to close it out of the blue. Cannot call the visitors center and get a person on the line either. Just a pre recorded message with their hours

This was the best spot ever! There are two spots that feels quite private. #2 has a little more view as it is elevated from the stream, and also a little more sun. #1 is right at the stream with a great swimminhole and play areas. We saw no poison oak or anything else to worry about. Temperaturs were at least 10 degrees cooler than the heat wave down at Whiskeytown, both the elevation and the cool stream helped.

Whiskey falls is a short walk on the main road from the campground and is spectacular. I loved my time at this campground. It was a hot weekend but the site stayed cool with ample shade.
