About Elk Creek Campground

Elk Creek Campground is on the north shore of Blue Mesa Reservoir. The lake is Colorado's largest body of water with 96 miles of shoreline and the largest Kokanee Salmon fishery in the United States. Elk Creek Campground is located off of US HWY 50 -15 miles west of Gunnison Co. at Mile Marker 142. The campground is part of the Curecanti National Recreation Area, which was named after a Ute Indian chief of the mid-19th century.  The Elk Creek area is a hub for water based activities year round.

Campers get funny about reviews, this place was amazing. Great view, clean bathrooms, helpful host, nightly gatherings at the little amphitheater. A lake to swim in, amazing stars, I mean come on, what more could you possibly need?

I enjoyed my week at Elk Creek campground. I loved that the had something different every night at the amphitheater. I camp here at least once a year. Was very sad of how low the water was though.

The bathroom is a problem. Toilets were not clean and bathrooms smells bad. You may want to look at the trap the gas and odors can really build up. The kokane fishing has really changed here over the past 5 years. The fishing has slowed down and the fish do no look heathy.

Upon arrival and before launching, all watercraft must be inspected and certified as Zebra and Quagga Mussel free. Inspection stations are located at the Elk Creek and Lake Fork boat ramps during peak seasons (May through October). Please visit Curecanti's Boat Ramps page for details.
