About Elk Creek Campground

Elk Creek Campground is on the north shore of Blue Mesa Reservoir. The lake is Colorado's largest body of water with 96 miles of shoreline and the largest Kokanee Salmon fishery in the United States. Elk Creek Campground is located off of US HWY 50 -15 miles west of Gunnison Co. at Mile Marker 142. The campground is part of the Curecanti National Recreation Area, which was named after a Ute Indian chief of the mid-19th century.  The Elk Creek area is a hub for water based activities year round.

While the wind and weather kept us from getting the canoe and paddle boards on the water, the surroundings were peaceful, the night sky spectacular and we had a nice few days (till one of us got sick and we had to leave early but that’s a whole different issue). The folks at the VC were super helpful and very kind. We’ll be back soon.

My husband and I camped here on our way to Ridgway state park. We had a pull through site which worked perfectly for our one night stay. Surrounded by sage brush and no trees we could see the other campers, but the site was roomy and comfortable. Distant views of the lake with very low water level, and nearby mesa are lovely. The Curecanti area is gorgeous. We really enjoyed the surroundings, and highway 50 to and from Elk Creek is fantastic. We will be back.

A quiet place with lots of views. There is a visitor center for the surrounding areas, with nice information, pictures and stories about the animals in the area.
Campsite it self is very clean. It can be windy on some days.
Mountain views are gorgeous and will never bore you!

Arrival & departure

  • All watercraft must be inspected for invasive species before launching.

Cancellation policy

  • Reservation fees are non-refundable. For campsites, cabins, lookouts, yurts, group sites, and similar stays, we charge a reservation service fee of $8.
  • Standard cancellations usually have a $10 cancellation fee. Customers can generally cancel before the check-in date online.
  • Late cancellation rules differ by stay type.
    • Individual campsites: cancelling after 12:00am local time the day before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
    • Cabins, lookouts, and yurts: cancelling less than 14 days before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
    • One-night reservations: a late cancellation usually forfeits the full amount paid, up to the total original reservation cost.
  • Modifications are allowed before the cut-off window, but fees depend on the change. Changing to dates completely outside the original reservation dates may trigger a $10 change fee. Extending or shortening a stay that still includes original dates usually has no change fee, though refunds may depend on timing and facility rules. Switching to the same type of campsite for the same dates usually has no change fee, but price differences are charged or refunded.
  • Early departures may or may not be refunded. At certain facilities, partial refunds may be possible if staff can mark the site available for other visitors. No refund is given for a night if the early departure is requested after that day's check-out time.
  • Security deposits are separate. Security deposits may be refunded to the original payment method if the facility is left in acceptable condition, as determined by the property.
