About Elk Creek Campground

Elk Creek Campground is on the north shore of Blue Mesa Reservoir. The lake is Colorado's largest body of water with 96 miles of shoreline and the largest Kokanee Salmon fishery in the United States. Elk Creek Campground is located off of US HWY 50 -15 miles west of Gunnison Co. at Mile Marker 142. The campground is part of the Curecanti National Recreation Area, which was named after a Ute Indian chief of the mid-19th century.  The Elk Creek area is a hub for water based activities year round.

Elk Creek is one of a few camping areas on the dammed up Gunnison River. Loop D has electrical hookups but was pretty full during the week+ we stayed in Loop A. Not busy at all in late September.
The only showers we found were at the attached marina area, and they were closed for the season. Excellent dump and fresh water facilities. Plenty of trash and recycling bins.
We were rather surprised at how full of stringy green crud was in the water when we paddled our kayak in the lakes. Still, they're lovely to behold from a distance and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
Most of the campers we shared the campground with were tenters. Wind and rain provided them with challenges, to be kind.
AT&T service was very good. Verizon was nada, nil, zip.
Bathrooms were immaculate. Camp host was not present during our stay.
Gunnison is about 20 minutes away. Crested Butte around an hour. Montrose an hour, but serious road construction going on which could make it much slower during weekdays.

We tent camped at Elk Creek Campground (site A23) Sept 18-19, 2022. We stopped at the visitors center (at the campsite) first and the person working was not very friendly. The lake was low so when we pulled up to our campground the bugs swarmed us. We ran to the local Walmart and bought a bug tent which helped tremendously. The tent also helped to provide shade since there was no shade at the campsite. The lake and scenery were beautiful. The night sky with all the stars was amazing. As far as the bathrooms, they were great with flush toilets and a sink with soap. We hiked the Beaver Creek Trail and the Curecanti Creek Trail (which was my favorite). All in all our experience was great with the exception of all the bugs but that comes with camping!

Arrival & departure

  • All watercraft must be inspected for invasive species before launching.

Cancellation policy

  • Reservation fees are non-refundable. For campsites, cabins, lookouts, yurts, group sites, and similar stays, we charge a reservation service fee of $8.
  • Standard cancellations usually have a $10 cancellation fee. Customers can generally cancel before the check-in date online.
  • Late cancellation rules differ by stay type.
    • Individual campsites: cancelling after 12:00am local time the day before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
    • Cabins, lookouts, and yurts: cancelling less than 14 days before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
    • One-night reservations: a late cancellation usually forfeits the full amount paid, up to the total original reservation cost.
  • Modifications are allowed before the cut-off window, but fees depend on the change. Changing to dates completely outside the original reservation dates may trigger a $10 change fee. Extending or shortening a stay that still includes original dates usually has no change fee, though refunds may depend on timing and facility rules. Switching to the same type of campsite for the same dates usually has no change fee, but price differences are charged or refunded.
  • Early departures may or may not be refunded. At certain facilities, partial refunds may be possible if staff can mark the site available for other visitors. No refund is given for a night if the early departure is requested after that day's check-out time.
  • Security deposits are separate. Security deposits may be refunded to the original payment method if the facility is left in acceptable condition, as determined by the property.
