Black Canyon of the Gunnison South Rim Campground

Very spacious campground with access to all major points.

Wonderful experience, the night sky was amazing!!!

We stayed on site #B13 and we really enjoyed it ! It was big enough for our 20 ft travel trailer and our truck. We had a few deer walking through our site also, along with a friendly chipmunk ! The site has one area for your camper /vehicle and another area for your tent, picnic table and campfire. We camped only as a couple and did notice that there is not alot of space for children to play or run around on many sites. The Black Canyon is an amazing park to visit with gorgeous views on every trail, it is truly breathtaking !

Clean and quiet campground with more privacy than most NP campgrounds. Camp host was friendly.

Black Canyon is an interesting National Park. I'm not sure it's worth it's own dedicated trip unless you plan on going to the bottom of the canyon (climbing and fishing are probably the two activities most worth while). The activities and trails at the rim on top are fairly sparse, especially with some COVID limitations in place. The 730pm Ranger talk at the South Rim campground amphitheater was enjoyable. We stayed two nights at the South Rim campground and again, not sure I'd recommend it. The sites are small and very close to each other. Our neighbors the first night were incredibly loud until almost 2am in the morning. If you're in the area it's definitely worth stopping by for half a day. We visited the South Rim in late July of 2021.

This site (15B) did not have a tent pad- as was advertised. We were able to change to another site with the campground host's help.

Host was very nice and helpful. Lots of wildlife coming and going in the campground. We even had a deer steal watermelon from our picnic table.

Enjoyed all the hikes/trails on the South Rim, especially Warner Point and Oak Flat Trail. Sunset Point is a must at day's end! The rangers were all very informative and helpful in determining which trails we could handle. The North Rim provided more awesome views of the canyon - just be prepared for unpaved roads. We enjoyed the North Vista trail - Exclamation Point is a must see!

The good: Nice spot! I'd definitely camp here again. Convenient to spots on the South Rim and very peaceful. Picnic table and metal campfire ring with grate for cooking (grate cannot be flipped off if not in use). Water available for bottle refill.

The bad: I've used a lot of drop toilets in my time, but these bathrooms were particularly smelly and full of flies — people kept leaving the doors open, I guess to air them out?, but it just let in more flies. No signs telling folks to shut the lid or doors. Also not much shade, most vegetation was scraggly and shoulder-height at best (nowhere to string up hammocks at most sites).

The campsite was ready for us at check-in time, clean, and semi-private. The camp host and other Rangers made their presence known. Drinking/handwashing water was available at each loop. There was no cell phone (T-Mobile) or internet coverage at A Loop.
