Located at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo, Alvarado is surrounded by lots of trees. Between the trees and the view of several peaks rising above the timberline it is a very scenic campground. Every campsite is large with lots of room between yourself and your neighbors. The campsite is located near the Rainbow Trail which is an easy trail to hike upon. The trail, however, provides access to numerous trails that head to the high country. One day I rode my mountain bike on the Rainbow Trail. The next day my wife, two dogs, and I spent several hours on the challenging Venerable Trail. I plan on returning next year and would highly recommend this campsite to anyone that enjoys the outdoors.

This campground is overlooks the valley and is surrounded by beautiful trees. It's a very short drive to two trailheads (Venable-Camanche) leading to the Rainbow trail. We had 2-3 bars of cell signal (T-Mobile). The vault toilet was full of flies and needed better servicing.

A beautiful, quiet campground. Plenty of (hard) hiking within walking distance. All sites had leveled tent pads (standard, not the equestrian).
