Alexander Springs Recreation Area

Park Manager Linda was very rude and not helpful during check in. We arrived at the park around 11:30am with a reservation for one night at Alexander Springs. This was my 3rd time camping at the precinct. We knew that checkin time is after 2 pm. However we got there around noon with the intent to enjoy the springs and then move to the camp site at checkin time. Linda said we could only have access to the springs upon payment of the daily park fee, even having a reservation for the camp site on the same day. I could not beleive she was charging us for a day use for a couple of hours knowing that we had a reservation for the same day. It is the same thing of you arriving at a hotel earlier than your check in time and not be able to stay at the lobby. unbelievable, being charged for a couple of hours to use the spring with a camp site booked for the night.

Spring was way over crowded. Never seen it like that. We could not find any open space to enjoy it. But it looked great for the others in there.

This is a beautiful campground to stay at. Just know that this is like other state parks where they patrol the camp constantly on their golf carts and strictly enforce the rules. While some may see no problem with this, it can also be looked as a turn off (it gets a little ridiculous). Also know that the price are now inflated just like everything else in the world. It’s no longer “cheap” to camp. It’s now $8 for a single bundle of firewood (no discount for a large amount bought), $9 a night for overflow parking and about $3.60(?) for a 7 lbs dinky bag of ice. When you are family camping in a tent for a week this adds up pretty quick. I guess this is the price of convenience. I suggest finding these items elsewhere. I would expect this from a privately owned campground but it’s sad that this is a state park and it’s almost not affordable for a lower income family to camp anymore. Other than that, the majority of the sites are private, however there are a few out in the open. I will say watch the roots and low stumps you may have in your site. I nearly broke my toe ramming into one. The spring is beautiful and “cold” (for this Florida baby) at 72 degrees year round. Don’t forget your inner tube!

Alexander Springs Recreation Area in Ocala National Forest is so stunning. Swimming, Paddling, Hiking, Camping, Fishing, Biking....it has it all. Staff is busy from the large numbers of visitors, but still, they are friendly and helpful. Day use area has plenty of room for a lot of folks to enjoy, Picnic tables, And BBQ gills all over. The campground is a wonderful heavy wooded place to camp for folks in RV, Travel trailers, and tents. Defiantly a family atmosphere.
