Very nice, small, quiet park. Chance to relax, see some astonishing wildlife. Park is a bit distant from a city for shopping or food. Be prepared to drive. We prefer just to hang and relax. Choice fishing on the river. We did drive to Okeechobee one night for a wonderful seafood dinner.

The second time we camped at Ortona on this trip and it was again excellent. David and Mary Lynne are great camp hosts and the camp was clean and in great shape as always!!! We've now camped in both the "upper" and "lower" sections and can't wait to come back next year.

Ortona South is a beautiful campground with clean, level sites and very clean restrooms. Potable (but not great tasting) water is available at all sites. Hosts and rangers are friendly, as are the engineers who work at the locks. From 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. one can watch boats pass through the locks or walk across the dam and lock bridges when no boats are crossing. There are quiet country roads for bike rides on the far side of the dam. Also, several trailheads are available within a 1 hour drive to ride bicycles or walk part of the 100 miles around Lake Okeechobee. At first glance, these paved trails appear closed by a gate, but that is only to stop motor vehicles. There is a pathway for bicycles and walkers to enter.

We love this COE park. The only improvements that we think need to be made are to have the road coming in swept and pot holes filled. The dump trucks hauling sand/dirt really leave behind a lot of sand and have caused potholes in the road coming into the park. The other improvement that needs to be made are to update the bathrooms and showers. Also, there is not a trashcan in the restrooms which make it difficult to throw anything away.
We enjoy biking in the park and out of the park to 80. Also, we ride across the dam and explore the subdivisions across the way.
It is great watching the boats & yachts coming thru the locks. It is a treat to spot an eagle, too.
This is our favorite COE park in Florida.
