Houchin Ferry Campground

I stay at Houchin Ferry several times a year. The only complaint I have with this Mammoth Cave campground is that it is the only NPS campground I have visited, and there have been many, that does not have a lights- out policy. As a matter of fact it has a light that actually comes on at dusk and remains on the entire night. It is a holdover from when there was a ferry running there that has been gone approximately fifteen years. This is especially annoying when I go on a new moon night in order to see all the stars.

Sites 1-4 are terrible. They are positioned so close it's like you are eating dinner with your neighbor. The on-site portable toilet's were not well maintained. I would definitely not recommend staying here.

The site was as expected from photos, etc. We did bring an air mattress we were hoping to blow up and got lucky with a helpful neighbor and a built in plug in their car. We regret not packing ear plugs for everyone as a neighbor tent's snoring woke us up. We otherwise enjoyed the site and didnt mind that all the sites were in use.

I really enjoyed my brief 2 nights. It was nice to be at the end of the road, no road traffic noise. Some of the sites are side by side while others are spaced out better. Fortunately the camp was only half full when I went in September so I had no next door neighbors. Porta potties were very well maintained from a man's point of view. Park personnel were very friendly.

Great spot for paddle boarding. The old ferry ramp made for good access. Other than the family playing in the water at the rock bar, I was the only one on that stretch of the Green when I went.

Quiet little campground. Portable toilets were well maintained, but a portable hand wash outside of the toilets would be nice. Cell reception is spotty at best. My husband has Verizon, and I have T-Mobile. It seemed when he has decent signal, I did not, and vice versa. A good place for some good ole rugged outdoor camping. I would definitely stay here again if I ever go back to Mammoth Cave.

20 minutes from the cave tours, this is a perfect campground. Beside it is the green river which allows for all kinds of recreational activities as well as being beautiful. The bugs aren’t anything out of the norm for a campsite, and the built in grill to the fire pit makes for a great primal cooking environment. Highly recommend it to anyone looking to go explore somewhere new and incredible.

Everything was great except that ferry light. Come on, the ferry has been closed about 15 years.

Our group liked there were a limited number of sites that were spread out really well. The toilets were large and clean. Big enough to change clothes in. Great access to the Green River for the paddle to Brownsville. The campground is isolated enough to fell like you are off the grid, but close enough to amenities like grocery, gas, restaurants for quick runs if needed.

Campground was pretty run down and gross. Our campsite was taken over by a large group of Boy Scouts who had their tents pitched all through the back of our site. We ended up not even staying because it was such a disappointment.

My 1st visit to this 12 tentsite campground. Campsites 1 & 2 have some exposure to sun. The remaining 10 tentsites are in full shade…….which is nice in July, 2024. Each site has firering, picnic table, and backup space for tent or short RV. Water is from a piped water source. Green River has access via a boat launch for canoe or kayak. Overall a nice quiet campground just 2 miles from Brownsville, Ky. (source for firewood, groceries, ice, etc).
I enjoyed my stay.
