What Guests Are Saying
Axtel campground is praised for its beautiful location, clean facilities, and friendly hosts, particularly Vickie, who ensures a pleasant experience for visitors. Many families enjoy the quiet atmosphere, spacious campsites with easy access to water activities, and a welcoming community of fellow campers. However, some guests noted issues such as low water levels, closed restrooms, and occasional noise, but these did not significantly detract from the overall positive experiences reported.

I love being able to look out onto the water all day and waking up and having my coffee by the water.

This campground was perfect in every way with a wide variety of selection in lots. I was fortunate to land a spot overlooking the water that was just breathtaking to wake up every morning an watch the sunrise and then the sunset with a nice fall fire in the evening. The other campers were very friendly and respectful and I can not say enough great things about the wonderful folks at the Gate, simply Amazing customer service and just a great down home vibe.

We originally reserved site #022 for 7 nights about three months prior to our arrival date. When we arrived at 5:20 PM it was “after hours” for the camp host to assist us. As we set up at this site we realized it was a non-electric site. I got online and reserved another site, but was not able to reserve for the total length of time we originally reserved. We moved to the new site that night. We contacted Recreation.gov online and attempted to cancel the original site; would not process the request. The next day I contacted them via phone and was told we would have to “cancel after the date of our departure”. When I contacted them on Monday after the departure date, I was told the site had been cancelled previously and a refund would be issued. When we received our refund the amount refunded was less than half of the original amount paid. How frustrating. Although it was my own negligence in booking the non-electric site to begin with the amount they kept as a penalty was much higher than expected. Definitely not our best experience, lots of frustration without results. Disappointing!

We camp at Axtel often. It is my favorite place. Clean and spacious and wooded. The swim area is nice and well marked and water is nice.

Axtel is a laid back place. I don't go there for attractions - I go for the ambience. Honestly, just to be lazy. There is a wonderful diner called Little Dave's that I frequent when there. Do some shore line fishing, and ride my bicycle through the park.

We had site A26. It states shade, there was no shade, full sun from morning to night. The "shade" that was spoken of must have been from the dead trees by the site. Speaking of trees, a crew of workers came in one day and spent several hours using chainsaws and bulldozers, talk about disturbing the peace and serenity. Overall it was a fair trip this time.
