About Assateague Island National Seashore Campground

Assateague Island National Seashore is a 37-mile long barrier island on the Atlantic Coast of Maryland and Virginia. Famed for its wild horses, this barrier island is a constantly shifting ribbon of sand, altered daily by powerful wind and waves. Assateague Island, dedicated as a National Seashore on September 1, 1965, lays claim to a long and rich history. Today's visitors can explore sandy beaches, salt marshes, maritime forests, and coastal bays. Only a couple of miles wide at its broadest point, the island's terrain offers shelter to the famed wild horses as well as sika deer, ghost crabs, and migrating birds such as the great blue heron and snowy egret. Favorite recreational activites include fishing, surfing, beachcombing, swimming, and sunbathing.  The Over-Sand Vehicle (OSV) Zone at Assateague Island contains miles of unspoiled beaches managed by the National Park Service to accommodate OSV enthusiasts and other beach goers. The Assateague Island National Seashore, Assateague State Park, and the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge work together to manage and protect this unique, diverse strip of land. We were very dissapointed with our trip but it was entirely our own fault…the natural beauty and facilities at assateague is every bit what you would expect from pictures online. Unfortunately the drive on beach fills up very early and we were not aware of this…we took our time cooking breakfast and breaking down camp before we headed down to discover a line that appeared to be somewhere between 50-75 vehicles waiting to get on the beach…once the beach reaches it’s limit each vehicle has to wait until someone else leaves. We expected it would be hours to wait judging by the length of the line and having no cars move forward in the 30 minutes we waited so we decided to leave without getting onto the beach. If staying over you should try to get to the drive on beach at your earliest convenience to beat the line of others who come just to access the drive on beach on the weekends without camping.

The nature and overall experience was great. I loved swimming in the ocean and the birdwatching is unparalleled. We loved how comprehensive the visitors center was. It was fun for all ages. The horses were everywhere, and were fun to look at. Knocking off a star because of the campsite bathrooms. These were by far the most unpleasant we’ve ever used. The building doubles as a bad weather shelter. I can’t imagine having to stay huddled up in one. If you’re a tent camper be warned.

We had a lovely time. The park staff was helpful. The beach was really clean. Our campsite was orderly. The horses will come right up to your tent/camp site, which the kids loved. Loved our stay here, would come again.

My only complaint would be that you need to change your reservation policy to state that if an individual does not check into their reserved site within 24 hours of first day reservation without calling or registering, then they should forfeit their site. There have been way too many times this and last year where I would be staying on the island and at least 1/3 of the sites would be empty because of no shows who did not bother to cancel. There is no place I know of, including hotels and other campsites that would allow this to continue. Almost all the places I go camping have a 24 hour check-in policy. If you don't check in within 24 hours you forfeit your site and money. Otherwise everything at the park is wonderful. Not really sure I understand why you are cutting the grass though. I always hear about the limited food supply for the horses on the island and yet I see that you guys are now mowing the lawn at the campsites. I think this is not a good thing for the horses and is a waste of tax payer money. Spraying for ticks and mosquitos is a different thing altogether. I am glad to see you are now spraying to protect the children, dogs and other animals from tick borne diseases. Thanks in advance for your attention to this review. Overall, any day on the island is a GOOD DAY!

I Love assateague! So pristine and uncrowded like other beaches. Oceanside campsites are the best! What a treasure!

Absolutely beautiful! Nice, private sites. Couldn’t ask for any closer to the beach. Showers and pit towels were clean. We’ll be visiting again!
