Very friendly staff at campground office.
Spent most of time hiking at non-dune locations.
Hiked the Kettles, Otter lake loop, Otter Creek loop, Bass Lake TH to White Pine campground, and Boekeloo trails.
These were all interesting trails.

This is one of our favorite campgrounds in the state of Michigan. The layout and spacing of campsites is great, providing a nice amount of privacy. The campground and bathhouse is always well kept. Trails are nice for hiking, with access to the lake.The park is in an area with just a car ride to many activities.

A wonderful park, with lots of exploring room with trails, beaches, great campgrounds, and helpful rangers.
Volunteer campground hosts were kind and efficient. Clean bathrooms with good shower at Platte River.
And I didn’t see ticks (was on the wider trails and sandy areas), great for these days!

Enjoyed the trails that you can use right from the campground.
One thing to keep in mind when choosing a site is that ALL vehicles and campers must be on the pad. It was a tight squeeze on our site with our trailer, truck and car but we made it work.

Platte River is a beautiful well kept campground. The sites are well kept and the layout leaves nice space between sites. The railroad trail to Lake Michigan is a great thing to do while there.

Platte River Campground is one of the finest I’ve camped at. I appreciate the wooded space between sites, the level tent pads, and the clean, heated restroom with showers and a dishwashing station. The rangers and hosts are friendly and helpful. As several companions had trailers or RVs, we reserved sites in an electric loop. I was afraid I would be disturbed by generator noise, but did not find this to be an issue.
Our sea kayaking club made use of the grills and picnic tables of its lovely pavilion by the river for a communal meal, which gave me an opportunity to check out the gently sloped path down to the ample canoe launching deck.
The Platte River is beautiful; a wonderful place for a “float” with bird watching opportunities. Fishermen were active along its banks. I’ve paddled it from one inland lake to another, and on down to the mouth. The boat ramp at the mouth of the river provides access to Lake Michigan. In a sea kayak, crossing the bar is no problem, but I doubt trailer boats could get through without being dragged over pebbles. (Please note the lake water is cold; kayakers should always dress for the water temperature and wear life jackets at all times!)
The canoe livery across from the Pavilion offers advice on conditions as well as camp supplies, shirts, souvenirs, and ice cream bars. We traveled to nearby Frankfort to dine out, to Empire Beach for a paddle to the Dune Climb, and into North Bar Lake. I have enjoyed many nearby Sleeping Bear hikes, such as the Empire Bluff overlook trail.
Highly recommended. Book early!

From the east (Traverse City): Take State Highway M-72 west to Empire. Turn south on State Highway M-22. Proceed 10 miles 16 km) (and turn right on Lake Michigan Road. Follow the signs to Platte River Campground.
From the south (US-31/M-115): At the junction of U.S. Route 31 and M-115, continue north for seven miles (11 km). Turn left on Platte Road. Proceed five miles and turn right on M-22. Proceed one mile (1.6 km) and turn left on Lake Michigan Road. Follow the signs to Platte River Campground.

- Entrance Fees - Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore charges a variety of entrance fees, depending on how a visitor arrives at the park. All visitors must have an entrance pass (separate from camping fees). The park also honors Federal Recreational Lands America the Beautiful (e.g., Resident Annual, Non-Resident Annual, Senior, Access, Military, 4th Grade, Golden Age). For more information visit the park's Fees & Passes web page. The Michigan Recreation Passport is not valid for entry at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, which is a federally managed site.
