The Ironman Michigan triathlon will be taking place Sunday, September 20, 2026.The bike course takes place on M-22 and will have significant impact on local traffic. M-22 will be closed from 8:30 am to approximately 2 pm between the City of Frankfort and Esch Road.To avoid road closures, arriving campers should not arrive before the scheduled check-in time of 2 pm.To avoid road closures, departing campers should exit by 8:30 am via Deadstream Road, Platte Road, or M-22 northbound. Southbound M-22 will be closed.

About Platte River Campground

Platte River Campground is located in the southern district of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, on the lower peninsula of Michigan. This year-round facility is one of the most popular campgrounds in the park. It is within walking distance of the Platte River and a short walk or drive away from the Lake Michigan shore. Hikers can access many of the area's day use and backpacking trails just north of the campground. Summer temperatures range from the upper 70s to 90 degrees F (25° to 32° C) during the day, and from the 50s to 70 degrees F (10° to 25° C) at night.  Winters are cold, with daytime highs from 20° to 30° F (-7° to -1° C) and lows in the 10s and 20s F (-12 to -7° C). Snow is usually on the ground from late November through March.

Well-maintained campground with a good amount of shade but sites are fairly close together with little foliage between sites. The tent pad and picnic table area are in addition to the stated driveway length so the sites feel very spacious. Be cautious when selecting a pull-through site as they have a significant bend in the driveway and trees along each side that make them more difficult to maneuver than a back-in site. Great access to Platte Lake and Lake Michigan for those with boats. Just a short drive to enjoy sunsets and the beach along Lake Michigan.

We had a fantastic camping experience! The restrooms were clean and well-maintained, with running water and nice showers. There was even a separate room for washing kitchen supplies, which was very convenient. The camping spots were well-separated, offering plenty of privacy, and the location was close to a trail that leads to Lake Michigan.

One thing to note: the electrical connection is a bit far from the campsites, so if you’re tent camping, you’ll likely need a long extension cord. However, it’s perfectly suited for trailers.

Overall, we were very happy with the experience and would highly recommend it. We’d go back in a heartbeat!

Walk-in campsite was very nice. Be prepared to carry your camping items a distance. You can’t use a wagon to help you. The distance is stated in the site description. The bear lockers were great to put coolers and all food or scented items in. Ample space. The bathrooms were very nice and recently updated in the Walk-In area. There are private shower areas that have a locked door. Everything is kept very clean and sanitized each day. There is a camp sink room, so bring a bag or something to carry your dirty dishes. Have a dishpan or pot to wash things in. It is located in the area where you park your car and between the two showers. The door is labeled.

The hikes are wonderful. Empire Bluff and Pyramid Point have beautiful views of Lake Michigan. The water looks like the Caribbean. The Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive is well worth it. One of the stops is a hiking trail.

As you come into Platte River Campground the Ranger Station is where you check in to camp. They have trail info there.

You can walk to Lake Mich from a path by the restrooms. Also, you can drive to Lake Michigan in 5 minutes - just ask ranger where it is. It is great to see the sunset from there.

Be sure and bring most of your food. There is no grocery store close to the camp. There are some items at the Platte River Canoe Rental place 1/4 mile from the camp, They also have ice.

This is our favorite vacay every summer. The campground is BEAUTIFUL, well cared for and in a perfect area. We check the same boxes each year traveling to Pierce Stocking Drive, Empire for some hiking and Glen Arbor for food and shopping. We love the Heritage Trail for biking. Don't forget the dune climb- a family favorite. There are plenty of beaches (even a Dog Friendly one off Esch Road) and super accessible rentals for the river. We find it to be the perfect blend of off the grid meets amenities. We leave feeling refreshed and rested each year. The camp hosts seem to always be kind and hospitable. The bathrooms are VERY clean and well cared for. 10 out of 10. We'd HIGHLY RECOMMEND staying here.

Hiking and biking from the campsite was great. Very nice trails and roads. Swimming was great in Lake Michigan and easy to access from a short bike or hike. Restrooms very clean and loved the sink area for cleaning dishes. Very clean and well kept park.

Our site was large and shaded. We had a good distance between us and our neighbors. The bathhouse was nearby and was kept in excellent condition. There were well designed showers with space to store clothes so they did not get wet when the shower was running. The staff at the ranger station were helpful. There were trails to go for a walk. We liked the place a lot.

All visitors must have an entrance pass (separate from camping fees). The park also honors Federal Recreational Lands America the Beautiful (e.g., Resident Annual, Non-Resident Annual, Senior, Access, Military, 4th Grade, Golden Age). For more information visit the park's Fees & Passes web page. The Michigan Recreation Passport is not valid for entry at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, which is a federally managed site.
