About Iron Lake

Iron Lake Campground is located in a dense forest along the banks of Iron Lake in far northern Minnesota. The campground is unique due to its remoteness and small size. Fishing and canoeing are its biggest draws, as the lake provides access to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. The Ham Lake Fire passed through the campground in 2007. Visitors may be surprised at how the burned area has grown back up.

All was very good. Campground was quiet and clean. Only negative was a couple of dogs in the campground barking very early in the morning. I would return.

I usually go to this campground once or twice a year. I like that there are only a few spots and its rarely full so it is always pretty quiet. The campground could use a little maintenance work as well as a few of the other national forest campgrounds in the area. I pull a 25 ft trailer and most spots are very tight to get into. Often times I need to trim limbs or small trees to get in or out. I usually try to get site 3 or 4 at Iron Lake . Both of these sites have nice views but are tight to get into. The shared driveway to get in needs to be widened out and is very tight to back a trailer in off the main lane through the campground . There is also a drainage ditch that interferes with backing in to either of these sites. Most of the site could use some side trimming or small trees removed. The bugs were really bad during this particular camping trip so glad we brought plenty of bug spray.

Enjoyed Iron Lake campground; a clean, simple, no unnecessary frills, Campground.
The quiet was ruined by one camper who ran a generator all night, every night, and most of the day.
