About Iron Lake

Iron Lake Campground is located in a dense forest along the banks of Iron Lake in far northern Minnesota. The campground is unique due to its remoteness and small size. Fishing and canoeing are its biggest draws, as the lake provides access to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. The Ham Lake Fire passed through the campground in 2007. Visitors may be surprised at how the burned area has grown back up.

Nice, peaceful cites. Provided the perfect spot to get a good nights sleep before entering BWCA.

We had a very peaceful stay at the campground. The only issue was some of the heavy rains this summer had washed out part of the drive down into site 7 which made accessing it a little tricky in a passenger car.

Fantastic campsites, most with little trails to the waterfront. Very quiet with only the slightest road noise in the distance when one of the few cars goes by. We've stayed here twice and loved it each time. After the addition of a cell tower in Sept 2021, there is now cell coverage at this site. We have mixed emotions on this, since we liked unplugging from the world for a few days. But it is good too be able to contact someone if needed!

I would highly recommend this campground to anyone looking to get away from the city and enjoy some peace and quiet.

Worth noting, pack in some water with you for drinking, washing dishes, putting it fires etc. as the on-site water is very slow flowing (comes from a solar powered pumping shed near the front). Vault toilets have been pretty clean and not smelly on both our trips. No running water for hand washing, so bring some sanitizer!

Best camping site on the Gunflint. Well tended sites and pit toilet. Water available at central location but no threading for hose; must use container.
